  • Hi Tessa,

We’ve received some reports of this. Right now, we are trying to track down the variables as it is affecting some and not others, which makes it more specific to the mobile environment (such as operating system and maybe type of phone).

In our own direct testing, we haven’t been able to reproduce the problem. However, many of the reports seem to be from those using a model within the Samsung Galaxy line, but there have been a couple others mentioned.

I’ve also tested in Android’s developer emulator, which has helped further our investigation slightly, but because these Android Virtual Machines are known to be buggy, we are hoping to reproduce on a mobile device so that we can take a closer look at any JavaScript errors that appear in the Console on pages where our apps should load to then isolate the problem within our code and patch it.

This is a recently reported issue that we hope to have resolved ASAP. At the moment, we are gathering information such as phone model, operating system version number, and browser details and asking all publishers to clear their cache/history then check to see if the problem also occurs in our demo environment (which narrows things down considerably).

Any details you can provide from your client would be very helpful and much appreciated.

    Hey there,

I’d love to wield some magic and have tried my darndest to perform a reset of your recommendations data, which you are correct in that it is totally on our side. However, we are performing some work on our Analytics (which is used in the generation of your recommendations), and this is causing a problem with grabbing your ‘new’ URLs.

Unfortunately, your Related Content will be out of commission for a short while until we finish up the work being performed on Analytics, but I have added your details to the ticket (SHR-616) to make sure your new recommendations are delivered to you ASAP. Just keep the feature active, and you’ll hear from me as soon as we get things going again on our end.

Thanks for you support and patience!

Are you also having trouble seeing the apps in the stock iPad browser (Safari), or is it only happening in Chrome?

    haha Don’t worry–you aren’t being annoying πŸ™‚

Let me see if I can point you in the right direction.

First, make sure you check the manual insertion article for help in locating the shortcode and instructions on how to properly utilize it in your template files.

Now, when applying styles, you can finely target the app by way of the data-app-id, like:

    [data-app-id=”xxxx”] {your styles go here}

You can use the above to apply position:fixed and then use top or bottom and left or right to tailor the location.

Right now, the shortcode automatically selects the post to be shared, but soon we will be making it where you can pass in link, summary, and title values if you’d like to override the automatic-selection. Look for that in an upcoming update.

And here are some references concerning positioning with CSS if you need more assistance.

    Hope this helps!

Hi! I’d love to help. For your second question, could you please provide me with a link to a page that I can test for the problem along with a more detailed description of what is happening?

As for the visibility issue on your iPad mini, try clearing your cache/history and checking again. If they still do not appear, please check the following two pages for the buttons and please update me with your results:

https://shareaholic.com/publishers/sharing/ (our share buttons demo page)

    Hey eldenroot,

The connection with our app to Twitter (OAuth) was in place years before the multi-share panel was added. We use Twitter as a third-party developer; so, even if Facebook is removed from the Twitter share panel, we would still be using OAuth for Twitter connection (the user has to authorize our application to connect and performing the sharing action on their behalf), which is completely safe as we conform to Twitter’s third-party development standard practices and usage guidelines.

The reason we paired Facebook and Twitter is because they are the top two sharing networks reflected in our usage data as well as services that utilize OAuth, which is an open standard for authorization. Many WP plugins and applications connect via OAuth, such as HootSuite. You can also view which apps are connected to your Twitter account on the Apps screen of your Twitter Settings panel and revoke access to any of them at any time: https://twitter.com/settings/applications

Hi! I’m happy to help fix any Related Content issues you are running into. Could you please direct me to your blog so that I can take a closer look at the problem? Thanks so much!

    Hi Umberto!

It looks like you are commenting on our new version 7 plugin. We offer two layout options for Share Buttons accessible in the Edit panel of the app you’d like to configure: the standard horizontal bar and the new vertical bar. We’ve also made it easy to manually insert any of your configured apps in case you’d like to add our buttons outside of your looped content, allowing you to create cool fixed top bars or footer bars or place our apps in your sidebar as a widget or create a fixed (‘floating’) sidebar tab. You are free to experiment, and we encourage this, as we made sure that v7 is extremely friendly for web developers, web designers, and those who like to tinker with customization. πŸ™‚

P.S. In version 6 and since the addition of Classic Bookmarks, Classic Bookmarks is independent of SexyBookmarks. You do not have to enable SexyBookmarks in order to use Classic Bookmarks, but if you liked using Classic Bookmarks, you’ll love version 7 and all that it offers as you can fully customize several different automatic button placement options independently and choose from a wider range of styles.

We’ve also made the plugin completely responsive, and you can even style your Related Content apps and set a blacklist to finely tune what content is recommended. πŸ™‚

    Hi AlterityDan,

I really appreciate hearing your feedback. We felt the same way you do about the plugin being overly bloated with some compatibility issues that needed to be addressed, which is why we took to rewriting the entire plugin. We’d love to have you transition to our v7 release that provides much better control and customization options. It’s also completely responsive, and you’ll never again have trouble with absentee buttons after updating.

Instead of continuing to patch the old plugin code that was first written several years back, we decided it best to start fresh using the community input we have gathered over the years, allowing us to tackle bigger issues that we simply weren’t able to easily correct in the older version as time has brought with it many changes, but we decided to stop fighting time, finally changing with it and adapting.

I welcome you to install our latest v7 release, and let us know what you think.

    You’re welcome πŸ™‚
And a quick update… I’m told that the Facebook Like button is making its return within the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for our updates and happy blogging!

    Hi Dvaer,

Our plugin isn’t currently compatible with custom post types, but I thank you for the information you have provided. I have submitted a ticket to engineering to have this information reviewed so that we can hopefully offer automated control between our plugin and custom post types in the feature.

At this time, depending on how the custom templates utilize hooks, our plugin may or may not appear when these custom content templates load. I understand that using manual placement in these situations can be a burden as it disables the controls provided on individual entries.

If you’d like a workaround for disabling on specific posts when using manual placement until we do offer support for custom post types, I’ll be happy to help. I just need to take a look at your blog to provide a tailored response. Thanks!

The exclusion list and data used to generate your recommendations are on our server. Your customization settings are cloud-based. If you see any URL that you have added to your exclusion list is still visible in your recommendations, please clear all caches (caching plugins and your browser).

Because the Related Content app works alongside our Analytics tool, broken links will be automatically purged within a 30 day rolling period. However, I’ll be happy to reset the data on our end so as to have your content scanned again, which will generate up-to-date recommendations. I’ll just need your web address. Thanks!

The share counts are directly pulled from Facebook. We do not calculate these numbers. We just retrieve the share data on file for a particular URL from these services.

You can view the data Facebook has on file for any URL on your site by using this link. Hope this helps!

Hi Joyce! I really hope you’ll reconsider your decision to remove our plugin.

Local caching happens with any site you visit on the internet. The way local caching is handled depends on browser settings. If one of your readers visits your site and opens a post they haven’t yet viewed, our apps will load perfectly for them.

And if you are using a caching plugin, what it does is cache a static version of your site that unfortunately, will not be automatically updated after installing and configuring a new plugin, but this is not by fault of the Shareaholic plugin.

Caching plugins are really awesome tools to help speed up your site and are recommended for a better WordPress experience, especially for established sites, but they basically function as a way to use backup copies of your content to reduce the server load.

After installing new plugins or making any changes within your blog, you should always clear the cached data in any caching plugins to make sure you are purging the static copies so that new ones can be created that contain the changes made.

And if you only need to worry about local caching by your browser (if you do not have a caching plugin installed), visiting a URL you haven’t yet opened or one you haven’t visited in a while (since the last time your cache was emptied by you or the browser) will load the page source, complete with our apps in the spot you specified for them to render.

We cannot control caching, except internally inside our own plugin resources. I’d love to welcome you back into our publisher community. I think you’ll really enjoy using Shareaholic. If/when you do reinstall, just make sure to empty your caches after configuring your settings and you’ll be all set! πŸ™‚
