Hi @mimibondi,
Yes, it’s possible with our plugin.
So far, we support protecting videos that are self-hosted or hosted on Amazon S3.
We display your videos in content using auto-expiring links. So you no longer have to worry about link exposure.
To support you faster & easier, could you please drop us an email at hello(at)preventdirectaccess.com or go to our chat support, @mimibondi?
Hi @mimibondi,
Thanks for reaching out to us.
Yes, it looks possible with our plugins.
Just to confirm, you want to protect your videos against downloads, right?
To assist you better, may we know where you’re hosting your videos now?
If possible, please send us a sample file URL to take a look at.
You might also want to drop us an email at hello(at)preventdirectaccess.com so that our team can support you faster.
Hi @airtasker6,
Thanks for getting back to us.
Just to be clear, which PDA version are you using now?
Please drop us an email at hello(at)preventdirectaccess.com or go to our chat support so that our team can support you faster.
Hi @airtasker6,
Thanks for reaching out to us.
It turns out that you’re embedding a protected image into your page, i.e. https://siliceoussolutions.com/library/_pda/2021/11/cropped-SILICEOUS-SOLUTIONS-Logo-Transparent-2-150×150.png.
By rights, only users who logged in with correct permissions can view your protected files, both via direct URLs and attachment pages.
In other words, it’s an expected behavior when non-logged-in users can’t see your embedded images.
Can you view the image when logging in as an admin user/file author, @airtasker6?
Which plugins or themes have you recently updated, by the way?

Hi Russell,
Yes, you’re right.
To allow logged-in users to download protected files, you’ll need our PDA Gold version.
Let us know if it makes sense to you.
Hi Russell,
Yes, you can absolutely achieve that with our plugin.
#1. Our PDA Lite version allows you to grant protected file access to admin users and/or file authors.
Meanwhile, our PDA Gold version allows you to grant logged-in users or even custom roles access to your protected files.
Are your users required to log in to your site before downloading files, Russell?
#2. Just to clarify, upon protection, all your files will be moved to our protected (_pda) folder. Original (aka unprotected) URLs will return 404 by default.
- Here is the (new) protected file URL: https://sherver.co.za/funtronics/wp-content/uploads/_pda/lm_uploads/2022/11/ER02-Day-Skipper-Exam-Report-Form-v2.0.pdf
- Here is the original file URL: https://sherver.co.za/funtronics/wp-content/uploads/lm_uploads/2022/11/ER02-Day-Skipper-Exam-Report-Form-v2.0.pdf
So if you already embedded your files into content before protecting them, you’d need to replace the unprotected URLs with protected URLs (which contain _pda) accordingly.
Let us know if it makes sense to you.

Hi Russell,
Thanks for getting back to us.
Our rewrite rules have been inserted correctly. Could it be a caching issue?
We’re redirected to your 404 not found page when accessing your protected URL, which is correct.
Can you access the file when logging in with the correct permission, Russell?

In reply to: [Prevent Direct Access - Protect WordPress Files] Add to ZipThanks for the information, @herjafader.
It looks like an expected behavior.
Our PDA plugin helps you protect files against direct access.
Your custom script doesn’t have permission to access your protected files, so it can’t get files to add to ZIP archives.
We have a solution to grant custom script access to protected files, which is available in our PDA Gold version.
Could you please drop us an email at hello(at)preventdirectaccess.com so that our team can assist you in this matter faster?

In reply to: [Prevent Direct Access - Protect WordPress Files] Add to ZipHi @herjafader,
Thanks for reaching out to us.
To assist you better, may we know how you’re adding files to ZIP archives now, e.g. running a script?
It’s best if you could provide us with more details about that process.
Which PDA version are you using now, by the way?
You might also want to send these details to our support email – hello(at)preventdirectaccess.com so that our team can support you faster.

In reply to: [Prevent Direct Access - Protect WordPress Files] webp is not supported yet?Hi @hungpham,
Thanks for the confirmation.
It turns out to be a known conflict. To be more specific, WebP Express plugin seems to overwrite our rewrite rules in .htaccess file, causing our file protection not to work correctly.
We have a solution to deal with the conflict using “Force Local Rewrite Rules” option, which is available in our PDA Gold version.
Please refer to our documentation here for more information:

Hi @lfedele,
Thanks for reaching out to us.
It could be something to do with overwritten .htacess.
It looks like many users who are using WPML encountered the same issue as yours.
They have a workaround for it as documented here:

In reply to: [Prevent Direct Access - Protect WordPress Files] It’s not workingHi @lakers24kobe,
Thanks for reaching out to us last night.
It looks like you’re using Cloudways NGINX server, right?
While our PDA Lite version supports most NGINX-based hosting providers, it may not work on all NGINX servers.
For specific hosting providers like Cloudways, which comes with a heavy server cache, you’ll need our PDA Gold plugin.
Actually, the Nginx server will cache your static content including all your WordPress file uploads.
Excluding protected files from Varnish caching wouldn’t be enough. For our file protection to work properly there, you’ll need to use our Keep Raw URLs option, which is available in our PDA Gold version.
Please refer to our documentation here for more information:
https://preventdirectaccess.com/docs/cloudways-hosting-support/#raw-urlsTo assist you better, do you mind sharing with us what you want to achieve with our plugin, e.g. your use case, in more detail?
How many files do you want to protect, and who can access your protected files?
