  • Hi,

What I would do is then use the Vimeo video embed and set the size of the embed screen to the exact proportional height of the video so you don’t see and bars. Vimeo allows you to customize their player so it shouldn’t be a problem.

BTW, I can see in my code source that it is adding the rel code to the image links, but it just isnt working

    @jonimueller,

Yeah your probably right. I do run off a shared server, but no one else using it is smart enough to change any advanced stuff, plus our hosting company updates all the server side programs constantly. I think I should be fine, hopefully we won’t have a problem, but just in case I have backups.

    Thanks!

P.S. In terms of hardening WP, is there anything I should do that I haven’t listed above?

    Hi,

I had this same issue. It was somewhat of a bot attack. If you really don’t want them I would recommend WP-SpamFree. Great way to block out those spam comments.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,

Do you shoot in true 16:9? As in your video naturally does not contain letter boxes? If the video itself is truly 16:9 and not 4:3 with letterbox then all you have to do is change the embed size of the video player. Like for Vimeo, all you have to do is make sure the player pixel width and height match that of your video and it will look right. If your video is too big (like 720p) just proportionally downsize to keep those letterboxes out.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi there,

Well I manage about 10 WP installs myself. I’ve had this issue before. It looks like your being targeted with a bot attack here and there are a couple ways to deal with it. If these are self hosted blogs (personal or company server) I would have to say a plugin is really the only way I’ve ever found to work. WP-SpamFree has done wonders for me, that anti-trackback is also a good tool. A server wide solution isn’t really possible besides a normal firewall (which really won’t help WP spam) only because a WP install needs its info right inside its own folder. So really you might have to bite the bullet and do individual plugins. But once they are installed you can always just autoupgrade them as time goes on.

    HI there.

Well this is a interesting question. Widgets can come from plugins as well as just be embed into posts. A plugin can be anything from a spam blocker (which is invisible to your users), to a new sidebar widget which displays recent posts, something like that. The widgets pages are made for your sidebar, widgets are suppose to display there, and if you have a plugin that gives you a widget, it will display in the widget admin area. If you use a plugin that protects against spam for instance, you wouldn’t go to the widget area, but it wouldn’t appear on your site, you’d go to the options menu to play with settings. Widgets are purely front end stuff that appears for the most part in your sidebar. Plugins can do everything from protect a blog, to allowing people to see ad’s on your site. Widgets are something you want to use based on what your site is focusing on. If you run a travel site for instance you might want a widget that allows people to search flight times.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,

Try going to your Presentation tab and go to theme editor. In post themes there will be 2 files that have title information in them. Look for something like index.php, main index template, or home. Any file that would look like it carries the main page infomration.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi there,

Well you might have a configuration problem. Check your admin area and make sure things like “email required” or “website required” aren’t checked off. Normally you want to have the name and email be required (prevents spam).

    Hope this helps!

[Edit: Same question as above, and resolve?] I have a question, WP-SpamFree has blocked a lot of comments from this latest bot attack I’m having. But when I did a test comment to make sure things can still get through I get a (Please enable javascript and cookies in your browser) message. Is this WP-SpamFree? Are all my users going to have this issue?

    Hi there,

Yes, go to the plugin page and in the description for the plugin you will find a link to start the process.

    Enjoy!

    Hello stockhola.

The media uploader is a way for you to upload pictures to your wordpress database so they can be saved, and put into posts or pages. They can also be reused anytime because again…there saved in wordpress. Be careful though, you don’t want users getting a hold of that, make sure if you allow users to register for your site, they don’t have access to upload otherwise it may cause you some major headaches. If you want to post youtube videos, you can simply use the youtube embed feature and paste that code into your post, or do a search for plugin’s (there are many!)

Agreed with everything said above. You probably shouldn’t do it because it will discourage people from commenting, but at the same time use a spam filter. If you are using your blog hosted by wordpress, just use Akismet. But if you are self hosting I’d recommend WP-SpamFree. Hope this helps!

    Hey Crater,

Well I have had great luck with a plug called LightBox 2. It is a type of picture display that uses Java to grey out the background of your page and animate up pictures in sets that allow users to scroll through them. I would download that first, then download the plugin called Add Lightbox which takes all the pictures you’ve ever embed into a post and puts them in their own set, so you actually don’t have to do any coding. Just download and activate the two plugin’s, all pictures will begin to work with this feature instead of just plainly displaying in a window. Enjoy!

(They can both be found on this website in the plugins sections)
