    Heya johnthewordpresser2,

Yeah, anevins is right. That screenshot is definitely lacking some style.

Since it was a new install, you might just try reuploading your WP files, especially if you’re seeing other errors on the site (related or not).

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers! :)

    Heya southernswimbait,

Is that xml file you’re trying to import really big? Was there a lot of stuff at the site (on WP.com)?

If so, you may have a limit on how much you are able to upload at any one time.

    Cheers! :)

    Heya jonradio,

Is it cool if you could post the link to your site in question? Might help someone see if you’re being indexed or not.

    Thanks.

    Cheers! :)

Sounds like a browser cookie/cache issue.

Have you tried flushing your cache/cookies and logging back into the old site?

Even easier, if you have more than one browser you might use, try logging into the old site in a browser you didn’t use to visit/log into the new site with.

    Cheers! :)

    Heya margysdr,

I just registered at your freebuds site and as you indicated the registration form performed as expected. I’ve checked my inbox and spam folder but after more than 5 minutes no message received from your site.

Question to you: are you seeing the new registrations in your admin backend (in the users section)? You may or may not depending upon the fact that I have not confirmed the link in the email (that never got sent out).

My guess is either your site set up or server doesn’t have outgoing email services set up for you. I always tend to use one of my Gmail accounts and their smtp services to send out your site’s email.

For a long while I’ve use “Configure SMTP“.

You might try them as a next, easy trouble shooting step to see if you can easily get those messages going.

Hope that helps in getting them signing up!

    Cheers! :)

    Heya jjsbetteroff,

First off, don’t worry about sounding or feeling stupid, you’re not. We’ve all been to a place where we have questions and need some help. That’s why we’re all here!

Second off, you won’t have to worry about duplicate content (if I understand what you’ve described) if your category pages are just excerpts of the actual blog posts. From everything I’ve read, that little bit of text that might be the same as your blog post shouldn’t count against you. Of course, if you want to provide real value to your readers, have the post author write up a unique excerpt to use for this and other SEO purposes.

Next, and again I’m trying to interpret you here, personally if you link the three categories from the home page as you’ve described, I wouldn’t have a single /blog/ page on the site that lists posts from all three category. That would be overkill, I think.

As to the styling aspects of those three category pages, you’ll have to do some more research on the plethora of themes out there. But you should have zero problem finding one that displays thumbnails and excerpts as you’ve described. In fact the premium theme I use for my site does just that sort of thing automagically!

    Hope this is somewhat helpful.

    Cheers! :)

    Roger that tspek,

Looking forward to what you come up with. Love learning new stuff here. Cool on the plugin possibilities as well.

    Cheers! :)

    Heya tspek,

Actually that’s not true (the part about having to manually set up the redirects). But it’s also not simple and straight forward. The plugin does have the facility for you to set up matching options (regex) that compares the URL request to the rule you create and then redirects that request to wherever you want them to go. But again, this is not an easy solution to master and will take you some time to figure it out for your specific situation.

Short of that, however, I agree with you. There must be a way and I sincerely hope you find it. I’ll keep thinking about it and post back if something enlightens me 😉

    Have a great day!

    Cheers! :)

    Heya thatmadgirl,

Well bully for you! Seriously, so glad you got it working again. I’ll remember your solution for the next time I see this challenge.

    Cheers! :)

    Roger that, Carrie001!

Read through this plugin “Posts By Tag“.

In addition to listing posts by tags in the sidebar via a widget, there is information about the plugin’s ability to be used to display posts via a template function.

Hopefully this is closer to where you are and can fulfill your needs.

    Cheers! :)

    Heya cnever,

No reason whatsoever to consider yourself anything other than one with slightly less experience with all this. We all learn new stuff every day (hopefully! I know I do!!)

Yeah, it was hard to determine the spacing issues at the beginning of the code that was inserted here. As to the commented section at the top of the portfolio-type.php page, I (ahem) assumed you had put that in when you inserted the code to this page.

Good for you, good for you. As to your question:

PS: do have a question regarding how to better manage the thumbnail look/cropping – code or in backend?

may I suggest you create a new post in the appropriate forum?

    Cheers! :)

    Heya niket115,

Yeah, I wasn’t attempting to indicate that the plugin used by thousands was the culprit, simply trying to find a troubleshooting “halfpoint” to know which way to move as we worked to getting you a solution.

More to the point, however, you just never know how one plugin or theme will interact with another. And since you didn’t indicate you had turned everything off in your attempts to solve, I felt it prudent to ask.

I agree that it seems strange that with no changes things suddenly started going awry. So, even with all the plugins deactivated, the lost password link shows up? Hmmm.

I did a quick search of the support forum posts for the Lightword theme you are using and nothing there regarding this sort of challenge. I’m sure you already switched to the default WordPress theme and tested to see if this challenge still exists (can’t imagine the theme being responsible, but sometimes stuff in the functions.php file mess about with working things, you know!)

Will continue pondering this one with you.

    Cheers! :)

    Heya arranrice2012,

You have a choice when dealing with domain name services (DNS). Is the new host you are moving to also the domain name registrar? Meaning wherever you bought your domain name? If no, then you need to log into your domain name registrar account (like GoDaddy, NameCheap or wherever) and find the place in your account where you can tell the registrar where to point requests for your domain name. Those are the Name Servers listings. If you host at your registrar (e.g., GoDaddy) they will usually have a simple “hosted here” option (may not be those exact words, of course 😉 ).

Guessing your new webhost is NOT where you registered your domain name. In that case you will want to log into your new hosting account and find their name server information. This is “usually” something along the lines of “NS1.NewWebHostCompany.com”, “NS2.NewWebHostCompany.com”, etc.

You will then take that NS info and insert it into your domain name account at your registrar.

Wait a while (some say 24 to 72 hours. Yikes!) and your new setting should be propagated throughout the global DNS system and when visitors type in (or click a link) to your sites, they will end up at the new host, not the old one.

Trust that is clear enough and helps out a bit.

    Cheers! :)

    Heya arranrice2012,

Did you get a chance to check out the Codex page for “Moving WordPress“? You should find everything you need there. But generally, I would think yes, making sure you DNS points to the IP of your new server and you have your wildcards set there as well and all should go smoothly for you. As always, back up everything!

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers! :)

    Heya cssmania,

Not sure I am able to discern an “upper gallery” and a “lower gallery” on the example page you listed. Is this indeed the correct page you wanted to show this for?

    Let us know.

    Cheers! :)
