  • Hello:

    I’m looking for any help or advice. I’ve done all the behind the scenes stuff to get my GoDaddy hosting, moved the domain to Godaddy control, etc and was in the process to import the XML file to the fresh new generic site that is sitting at:

    However, when I attempt the upload of the XML files and select the ‘download files and attachments’ and something about naming the authors or creating new accounts, I get a 500 Internal Server Error. The import fails and nothing happens.

    Not sure where to turn for help. I’m sure GoDaddy will tell me its a WP issue and I’m not sure how to trouble shoot where the import of the XML is failing or what the issue is?? Help!

  • I am getting an Error 500 message on the import. I have tried exporting a different XML file from my original blog, and the import into the .org self hosted at GoDaddy account still fails.

    I check the box to add attachments and download files. Godaddy support cannot tell me why I’m getting the 500 Error. Anyone ever gotten a 500 Error message on importing a XML file into their fresh .org site?

    Just check the php_error.log for the site, you may have to ask GoDaddy where to find it – that will tell you why PHP barfed.

    There are a lot of reasons for it to do that, I would presume it has something to do with the way PHP is setup on the machine, but you would be able to confirm that from the PHP error log.

    I appreciate the assist Max. Unfortunately, neither me nor GoDaddy could find the php_error.log. I found some other logs, but none of it is intelligible to me.

    I cannot even seem to find a way to purchase a “Guided Transfer” …I’m on the right site, I’m sure of it:

    But the purchase button doesn’t work for me! I cannot even get paid help at the moment! How come the guided transfer button isn’t working to purchase some help for $129?

    Heya southernswimbait,

    Is that xml file you’re trying to import really big? Was there a lot of stuff at the site (on

    If so, you may have a limit on how much you are able to upload at any one time.

    Cheers! :)

    James: The XML file is 1.8MB

    I don’t think it’s an ISP issue or something about maxing out upload file sizes, but perhaps it’s worth a try. I will try to do the import/export from a different ISP connection.

    Also, I was thinking, when I check the box during the import process that says something about “adding attachments”, I do have quite a few embedded photos and YouTube vids in my blog, but I have no clue how XML works and how it would attach/add files during the import, but 1.8MB cannot be the entire size of the blog I have at

    It sounds like an upload size issue with GoDaddy. Increase your parameters in your php.ini file to something like:

    max_execution_time = 120
    max_input_time = 120
    memory_limit = 128M
    post_max_size = 2M
    upload_max_filesize = 2M

    or try WordPress WXR File Splitter (RSS XML)

    Yah, what songdogtech said (which was in my head, really 😉 ).

    Hopefully, you’ll be able to get to your php.ini file with the GoDaddy account.

    Let us know if you get the import solved.

    Cheers! :)
