In reply to: WordPress.com Stats issueHi, everybody. There have been a lot of threads here on stats issues and a lot of support tickets on WordPress.com. I apologize for our failure to respond to everyone.
We are fixing issues on our end of the stats system. The old Stats plugin is meant to keep working. These issues are not our way of encouraging you to switch to Jetpack; they are the result of bugs introduced in code written by Automattic engineers like myself.
It is something of a coincidence that switching to Jetpack has resolved the issue for some people. While we are pleased to see people adopt the new plugin, we are also working to restore service to everyone using both plugins. Thanks for bearing with us.

In reply to: Blocked from accessing stats. There is a bug in the stats server preventing some people from accessing their stats. Stats are still being collected, you just can’t see them until we fix the bug. You don’t have to do anything at this point.
We just deployed a change to the stats server that may improve this for you. If it does not improve, please adjust the time zone in your blog’s settings. If it is already correct, save it as a different time zone and then correct it again. This will signal your blog to send the correct time zone to the server.
Thanks for reporting this bug. It is fixed in the 1.8 branch. To avoid pushing too many upgrades, I’m going to wait before bumping the version number.

In reply to: [WordPress.com Stats] WordPress.com Stats: Stopped workingIn versions 1.8 and 1.8.1, that URL is only slightly different from version 1.7.5. One important difference: it is http in 1.8 and https in 1.7. (This change was made to accommodate users on hosts which do not provide SSL for encrypting outbound connections.)
I suspect that your host has an overly strict firewall that prevents you (and your software, including the stats plugin) from connecting to other services on the internet. That is why I suggested you contact your host. It is still my advice to you.
I hope you see that your host’s firewall (if my suspicion is correct) is a naive design for naive users. You are using powerful software and should not be restricted in this manner.
Please post here when you get an answer from your host. I’m interested to learn who they are and why they do this.

In reply to: [WordPress.com Stats] [Plugin: WordPress.com Stats] Flot ChartsIt’s almost done. When I get back from vacation I’ll finish testing it. When we flip the switch, you’ll see the sexy stats without having to upgrade your plugin. Hold your breath!
WordPress.com Stats does not support domain names with non-ascii characters (IDN). We will consider adding support at some future date if they become significantly more popular.
The wp_footer solution is so common it’s in the FAQ. If you are helping, please consider that first. Cache and cookies are relevant to a very small set of problems and should never be the first suggestion when it is not clear what the user is reporting.
It is very common for a user to upgrade WordPress and make several other changes at the same time. When they see something go wrong, what they remember is the big change: upgrading WordPress. We see this kind of report very often. Never assume that the change reported by the user was the only change.

In reply to: [Plugin: WordPress.com stats] vs. google analyticsNobody knows.
Google’s definition of “visit” is probably a very complex algorithm that they don’t share. WordPress.com’s definition of “view” is probably a much simpler algorithm. Both are at least partially proprietary and totally subject to change.
So there is probably nobody alive today who could tell you exactly why they are different.

In reply to: [WordPress.com Stats] Hide stats from Authors.Find the WordPress.com Stats options page. It has checkboxes next to the roles that can see stats. Uncheck the ones that shouldn’t be allowed to see stats, then save.
Check the stats plugin’s options page. There is an option to stop counting your views when logged in. What’s that set to?
Hi, Zanes,
The WordPress.com Stats plugin does not have any concept of visitors. The word “visitors” is intentionally avoided in favor of “views”. You could have one person load the page 500 times or 500 different people load the page once; either way, the number of “views” is 500.
The clicks counted by WordPress.com Stats are supposed to be clicks away from your site, not clicks among your own URLs. That should explain why your own images don’t show up in the click stats.
