I installed it right from WordPress.org that same day.

Just to top it up. The theme is free. You can download the full theme on WordPress and get started. No strings attached.

However, if you want to add extra functions you can choose to buy the add-ons. At the current price the add-ons are cheaper than many premium themes I have bought and don’t now use. So, to me, the add-ons are well worth it. Not just for the added functions but in order to support the theme developer and keep the theme a project he continues to work on.

One downside of a free theme is the lifespan. Theme developers have bills to pay too. So a free theme will only get so much time and attention.

The way GeneratePress works is actually quite smart. You can choose the free theme and do your own customizing. If you want to keep it completely free you do your own work. That’s fair enough. Along with the free theme you get the benefit of a premium theme due to people who are paying for the add-ons because the theme is supported by the community.

One other thing which I looked for was how long the support lasts. I won’t buy a theme which asks you to pay for it and then only gives you one year of updates. In a sense it’s not terrible because I have tended to become dissatisfied and changed themes in that time anyway. But, I rate GeneratePress as one of the top three themes I’ve ever used since I began online (before WordPress existed).

Whether you technically consider GP a free theme or not – it is a great theme to have and I have no problem making the one time payment to have the extras.

You are welcome to quote me. I should be able to make the tweaks for moving the text ok.

Pratt has a clean, open look and the best features from my favourite premium theme. So I’m impressed and looking forward to seeing more of the themes you develop.

    How is that resolved?

I have the same problem with the Google+ Comments plugin. I put it at the end too but that still leaves a big gaping whitespace before my navigation at the end of the post.

I have been hoping an update would show up with a fix soon.

I’ve had my delicious account for many years. Long before Yahoo sucked it up. I tried several options to import bookmarks and nothing really worked. Instead I created them into an HTML page and will deal with them when I have time. Most are likely dead of link rot by now.

Fixed it myself. One of my other WP blogs was letting me upload so I compared all the settings. In FTP I found the uploads directory was set at 755 on one and 777 on the other. That made all the difference.

If you have this problem, 777 works.

I’ve only had the auto upgrade work once. I’ve gotten to the point where I wonder why the auto upgrade is still part of the software package. To me it seems nothing but a big dud.

The manual upgrade with FTP is not tough. Basically, you are dumping the new files right in where the old ones are and telling it to use the new ones instead of the old files. Turn off your plugins, don’t delete them just deactivate them. After the new WP is loaded you can reactivate your plugins, they will be in the ‘recently active’ section.

If you have tried the auto upgrade once and had it fail use FTP and find wp-content/ upgrade. Get rid of all the failed files in there. Those will block a new try at the upgrade. Just delete anything in the upgrade file.

Here is what you need for the manual upgrade. Copy all the new files over the old ones, except for wp-content which has your themes and plugins.

I’m not a WP developer but I’ve done this enough times to know it works.

In reply to: Home page is blank

I’m getting the blank blog too. I had the directory error as well and did the fix which was in the forums. I still have the same error. I hope you find a fix for the blank page esmi. I think I have had enough of this new version and it’s bugs and glitches. I am going back to the last stable WP.

I’m getting the same problem. Will see if this works. Today my blog is loading as a blank page. Not sure if this is another new problem or related to this.

Thanks. I noticed it has a problem with a title using anything other than the standard alphabet. The post title yesterday did not use any extra characters, just letters, and it still happened.

I tried changing the title 3 times but it made no difference.

Bumping this. Hoping someone knows something that will help. I tried looking online but there are too many other things with the same search words.

    It’s working!

I found the thread about a blank page and tried the fix for adding a theme. It gave me something about an upgrade which I clicked through. Then it went blank again. I typed in the same URL for wpadmin/theme and then it said I had not chosen a theme.

Now it works. So odd. 🙂

Thank you both and the people from the other thread. It’s so great to be able to come here and always get help.

Happy New Year and thank you to all the WP volunteers. I can’t imagine how things would be without each of you. You are all great.

For some reason I changed the database to my user name and it said I already have WP installed. So it’s there but now it isn’t showing up. Just a blank page.

I think I read someone else post that same thing the other day when I was in here reading about WP2.

Netdetective, if you pick up a guide to CSS you will find out how to fix your theme problems. Also, read the pages on Codex about making WP themes. There is a lot of information but if you read through you’ll find the parts you really need to keep in mind. It’s not as tough as it seems when you look at it from the beginning. I’m getting the hang of it, still have to find out what needs to be added to the CSS code I’ve got ready which will make it work with the WP blog.

If you ever had a blog with Blogger you will know there are certain tags which Blogger must have to function. WP is the same. Its just a matter of getting your CSS and HTML designed as you want them and then you add the WP code to make them work together.

    Good luck. 🙂

Good for you! I hope no one finds any bugs at all and you become widely known for your excellent WP themes in 2006. 🙂

I’m working on creating my own themes too. I began teaching myself CSS, still in that phase really. I’m redesigning my whole site to meet web standards. Then I will get back to working on the WP themes.

    Glad you posted!
