  • Hi Shel, so glad you are testing Gutenberg. I looked at the website linked and you are referring to the photos of the podcast guests and I see what you mean.

This is a bit tricky. HTML5, the current standard for websites, doesn’t support hspace as an image property any more. This is expected to be controlled via CSS. (Source: W3Schools.com).

You can implement this in a two step process:

When adding the image use the Advance Settings > Additional CSS Class and add a special classname, say ‘hspace’ to all images you use for this purpose.

Save you post or save draft.

Got to the Appearance > Customizer > Additional CSS and add

    .hspace{
    	margin: 0px 20px
    }

It’s a little more cumbersome, I admit, but, you only have to do this once and every image where you add the Additional CSS

Let me know how this works for you now.

    Hi there,
not quite sure where you find things missing.
Image properties are set when uploading images, and that hasn’t changed, you can set your title and alt-text via the Media Library.
The Gutenberg image block has a corresponding sidebar panel, where you can update the alt-text for your image.
The front-end view display the alt-text.

AFAIK, the title tag doesn’t have any SEO implications, but I could be wrong there. You could file a github issue as a feature enhancement request to add editing the title tag into the block’s sidebar panel

Does this help, or did you find the two values missing on a different panel?

Hi Mary, thanks for much for jumping in. Wow, how could get this so wrong? I remember testing it an not being able to use the |More Tag. Hmm. Odd. Just tested it again and your are right. Works on Classic Editor as well as in Gutenberg. Thanks!

Glad you tried out Gutenberg and I regret you find it an unpleasant experience.

Yes I agree, that Divi builder and Gutenberg don’t go well together, yet. There is a silver lining, though. Nick Roach just published an article about Divi’s work regarding Gutenberg.

G P and amjch, Iris was kind enough to point you to a resource page on how to avoid Gutenberg altogether. If you have additional questions, would you mind starting your own topics. That makes for a much easier read for visitors that come behind us. Thanks

    Oh, I misunderstood your question
When WordPress 5.0 is released Gutenberg becomes the default editor and has built in fall-backs to a classic editor module.

If you want the Classic Editor to be your default editor, after WordPress 5.0 release, you need to install the Classic Editor plugin, also maintained by Core Contributors and that’s the plugin referred to in “It will be around for a long time”

    Does that answer your question?

    Hi there,
So you are now able to create a post and edit it with Gutenberg, and do not have a conflict with a plugin?

That’s great. Would you mind marking the first issue as resolved and open a new topic with the new issue?

Oh so you are getting the edit post page but it stays blank. Sorry, I misread your earlier message.

There might be a conflict with other plugins. We would need to deactivate one plugin at a time, and test if the problem still exists. With a set of 10 or 15 plugins this might not be possible. This is a live site and it might disrupt parts of your website during that testing for conflict. So we need to be careful.

There is a helper plugin, Health Check, with its Troubleshooting Mode It allows you enable /disable different plugins for you as the administrator, without interrupting the experience of your visitors. They still will see you site as intact.

A better way would be to asked your hosting service if they can assist in setting up a clone of your website, like a sandbox, so you can use that for further testing and leave your live site along.

This might sound a bit too much for you – quite understandably – I might add. Chance are you might not like these kind of puzzles like I do – hardly any one does.

    Hi there,
So sorry, you had an unpleasant experience with Gutenberg. I will try to assist you, but I would need more details.

When you say “my host helped me to get the default back to classic editor” – do you know what exactly they did? Did they install a different plugin?

There might be another plugin conflict interfering, too as I see there is quite a lot going on your site.

    Hi there,
There is probably a conflict with a previously installed page builder or plugin.

The purpose of the Try Gutenberg prompt widen the user base such as yourself and see what compatibility issues come up. So your assistance in troubleshooting your – admittedly horrible experience – would help considerably in the effort to make Gutenberg better and prepare it for a possible merge proposal.

Maybe you got the time to assist us and track down the cause plugin?

Testing for conflicts is fairly simple, you just disable your plugins and use a default theme. There is a helper plugin, Health Check, with its Troubleshooting Mode

The Classic Editor willavailable long after WordPress 5.0 is released. It actually was built as a way to not use Gutenberg when it becomes the default editor. When Matt Mullenweg as asked that question, he answered “maybe for a long time”.

I have not found a method to restrict the content displayed on the Frontpage vs on the Single page view. The only solutions, and you probably thought about it as well is to create additional page with about two paragraphs summary and the link to the more details page that is in my navigation. It’s also good to link deeper into your site from the homepage.

If you would convert your pages to posts, then the “more link” would come in very handy…

This seems to be fix with the newest version. Thank you, Jan!

    Thank you for your review.

What is the most favorite new feature of Gutenberg for you? I am a huge fan of the ‘Slash’ command to call up a new block from the inserter. “/i” for image “/q” for quote “/t” for a twitter embed.

    Hi there,
Glad you found the time to do some Gutenberg testing and leave a review.
Where did you find the text alignment option missing? They are, for instance, available in the paragraph block, the heading block, the classic block, and the quote block.

I totally understand that a new interface needs getting used to. The new location for all options for your content are now hidden away in the sidebar. Once you select a block they however become visible. It definitely, for a short period of time, had me spending time figuring it out. A few posts later, it’s now second nature to me. Maybe after another two iterations of plugin updates you might want to take another trial with Gutenberg.
