In reply to: Multisite for multilingualAbout features for pages (slug and template association), know that free xili-language is pluggable for pro or specific CMS solutions, so two solutions:
1. You do the plug / add-on yourself. and why not publish some results to thanks the core work…
2. You contact the author via the support in settings or in dev.xiligroup.com and after an analysis step, he can provide an offer based on quotation according time and hour/rate.

The better way: adapt your technical approach to your content strategy (and today authoring and maintenance…)

The algo about versioning (5 latest) can be hazardous: example for de_DE, because automattic database and subfolders are not well filled… If 3.5.1 version is searched, in final the 2.8 (from branch) is downloaded…it is the limit of automatic way ;-(

As shown in twenty twelve-xili example child theme, I think it is possible to create a child theme of Pilot Fish compatible with xili-language free plugin and add very nice features to manage a multilingual website.
(based on each language, cloning menu locations and widget spaces and more…)
With this approach, you will have a good CMS architecture with taxonomies based on WP core.

Your sources seems to be well written.
Can you write an article when you describe what your plugin do in terms of database architecture (new table ?, taxonomy ? custom field ?,..)
What will be your policies in term of support, services, ?
Will you follow the road of WPML becoming commercial or the road of the free of others like qTranslate, xili-language trilogy or polylang sharing theirs experience since 4 years ?
When do you plan to upload it in WP plugin repository ?Best regards,

For multiple reasons, xili-language uses language files in child and in parent theme (merging). Only the child is modified or completed by the local-xx_XX.mo files (containing specific translated texts linked to the website itself – terms, widget titles, options,…).
Advantages: nothing is modified in parent theme.M.

M.it is only a matter of time and duration… before waiting the improvements (versioning scheduling), good: the solution exists.
Because in admin side, performances are less important than in visitors side except if more multilingual authors than readers 😉

Personally, I prefer xili-language plugin to assign a language to a post and to navigate between language in front-end – the backend (dashboard) can have only one language

In reply to: [Polylang] best free multilanguage pluginEach of these plugins have their own way to organize datas and translations. Some creates tables, another use general options table and another only uses mo files to contain translation completing root language taxonomy for post.
As demonstrated in thousand of websites, xili-language trilogy is able to support
– switching of page (or any custom post type) according language.
– switching categories (translation of name and description)
– dynamic content navigation menus according language and or cloning of navigation menus (one content per language).
– tags clouds grouped by language.
– and more (if using plugin hooks and using features available in source)…
All is done without creating tables in the WP database since WP 2.3 and now WP 3.5. It is reversible.
Xili-language is free but with a little work it becomes a powerful tool for web masters even with complex content strategy or profit/commercial theme.M.
