In particular, what we’d need to see is some indication that the opening/vector for any hack was actually in NextGEN Gallery. Without that, there’s really not a basis to assert that NGG has a vulnerability. It’s important to note that once hacked (no matter where the opening was), intruders can do all kinds of things with your site. For example, the existence of a malicious file in a particular location on your site doesn’t tell you anything about where the actual hack occurred.
Right now, there are no known vulnerabilities in NextGEN Gallery. And with NextGEN active on 1.3 million sites, we’d usually hear about any vulnerability quickly and from a lot of users. Given that, I’m doubtful that your site was hacked via NGG.
Again, if you can provide any evidence that there is, we’d definitely respond immediately.
For what it’s worth, if you weren’t hacked via NGG, that means your site is still open to hack right now. So it’s worth looking into. There are vulnerabilities related to various WP plugins reported nearly every week, and there’s a live current one in WordPress itself as of today. You can see reports here: https://blog.sucuri.net/

At this point NGG is running reasonably fast in most environments. If we can get creds/access to yours, we’d make a priority out of trying to understand and resolve the source of any slowness. If you are up for that, just submit a bug report at Cais’s link above, and we’ll communicate directly with you from that point on.
Also just wanted to be sure you were running the latest version when you made this comparison (ie, 2.0.71 or later). The latest versions have some substantial performance enhancements…

I think if you want to change it, just click https://wordpress.org/support/view/plugin-reviews/nextgen-gallery and scroll down to the bottom.
You should see your review there, and you should be able to select a new star rating by hovering over the stars.
