  • Try going here – maybe you’ll get lucky and still be logged in –

    (and you can go to http://strausser.freehosting123.com/index.php/wp-content/ to verify you did not, indeed, move anything – )

    I think – and I’m just guessing – what happened as that the index.php is being interpreted as a directory name, not a default file; typically you won’t need to indicate index.php as the default file to open on a browser, unless you have another “index” file, like index.html or something.

    I have been having this problem for days now and can’t fix it – if xmlrpc.php is in my site root folder, it won’t work, but if it is in a subdirectory it will … I wonder if setting up a redirect to it will work, or if I’m going to have to change the code itself trying to ping to it?

    Look in the plugin repository – there is at least one plugin I know of that will update the page date anytime you edit it …

    Are you using Dreamweaver or any other sort of client to do the CSS markup? I’ve both seen and heard of it changing the CSS and the PHP – something to do with the cache, I think, and trying to “validate” the code by its own settings … if so, try just a plain notepad/text editor.

    In reply to: Tutorial type of system?

    I think this will work: try downloading the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin from the repository, then once it is installed, change the tag base from /tag/whateverthetagis to simply /whateverthetagis … make sense? So, I think from there you can work out some kind of system that will work out close to what you are wanting … I don’t know if you can give the tags heirarchies – you might can; if not, you could always make one tag called tutorials, then another called tutorials-css, then give a post both of those tags …. it’s worth a shot. Again, I’m not sure though – are you wanting it to look that way for the sake of the URL in terms of the user, or just for heirarchy/organizational purposes?

    You could also just use CSS to do all this for you; for example, you could put all the “regular” links in one div with an id of, let’s say, “sidebarbox1” and the links you want to open in a new window in a div with an id of “sidebarbox2” – then just use the style sheet to customize how you want them to look. So, something like this –

    #sidebarbox1 a {
    color: #CCCCCC
    }
    #sidebarbox2 {
    color: #FFFFFF;
    background-image: url(/somedirectory/someimagename.jpg);
    }

    This way, the regular links are whatever text color you set it to, and the second have a different text color, and an image as the background. I think you might still have to use javascript to open the links in a new window (not sure how it is done in WP), but that way you don’t have to add an extra PHP code to execute at each link to form the image.

    Also, you don’t have to use divs – you can make it classes or whatever you want, really – that is the beauty of CSS, the possibilties are virtually endless!

    Hey – I’m having similar problems; I have been using Feedwordpress and have been getting the same thing. But weeks ago, it was running fine, and I even put the old files back on the server and tried them as they were previously set up, however they didn’t work either all of the sudden. I think it is something either with my server/host, or the updated WordPress, or just something well-beyond my know-how.

    Now that I am looking at it, you may not even have to call that in the loop – check the documentation; you may can just stick it in wherever.

    Here ya go. Sorry, I couldn’t remember exactly what it was called – it is customizable post listing.php, something like that. If you can’t find it there let me know and I can send you the one I have here. It’s really great, and yuo can do all kinds of things with it.
    It’s there – I just checked …. custom-post-listings.zip

    I like to use the crc_recent_post plugin, or something like that. Just throw in a call to the Loop, plug in the code , and close the loop; Here is an example:
    <?php c2c_get_recent_posts(10, ‘%post_URL%<br><span>%post_date%</span><br>’, ”, ‘date’, ‘DESC’, 3, ‘m/d/Y’, ”, false); ?>

    So that is the last 10 posts’ titles and dates (you can also add the content, and even a preview – short or long – of the content). Just make sure to wrap that with the Loop.

    YES! – Thank you! I hadn’t seen this plug-in before! You, my friend, just saved me asking the question “now what were those wp-list-cats arguments again?” a million more times! Somebody kiss this man for me!

    I agree with all these replies; CSS is not only easy once you just go over it, you can design virtually anything with it. Furthermore, Adobe Go Live? To be honest, this might be more of the problem than a solution. Years ago, when someone told me this, I thought they were insane – but coding by hand is the ONLY way to go. I very occasionally bust out Dreamweaver because you can quickly make a good style sheet, but anything beyond that and you are just asking for frustration.
    Secondly, completely blank templates are the only way I like to go; but I would suggest looking at some themes and seeing how they are using little pieces here and there. I suggest Eric Meyer’s list of CSS links to get you started.
    Finally – Web Standards. Look it up. Sure, it means you can’t drag and drop a million flashy gadgets from some program, but take it from anyone who has ever worked in an environment where they had to make a Web page – not a site, but just a PAGE – that more than 2 browsers could accurately view (show of hands, version-4-browser coders!?!) – Web standards is the only way to go – which is why I chose WordPress after trying everything else and being immensley disappointed.
    At least meet people halfway and put in some effort before you go knocking this system many people worked very hard on and which is, in my opinion, the best on the net. Otherwise, they are called Web designers – hire one.

    Oh wow – I just now realized you had responded to this; THANK YOU so very much! (and sorry I didn’t see that in the documentation earlier – I promise I try really hard to find stuff out before I bug you guys here on the forums!); anyhow, thanks again!

    No, actually I’m trying to figure out how to go the opposite direction; not how to get the RSS feeds of categories, but aggregating content from another feed into categories. FeedWordPress is a feed aggregator that turns items from a feed into posts; however, you can only set the plug-in to use one category as the category that all the different URLs it is aggregating go into; so every item from, say, greenplastic.com goes in the same category as something from, say, a comic book news source. I’m just wanting to categorize the few news-feeds I am syndicating in my blog.

    You can hack around and assign categories to pages – I’ve done it before; I ran into problems once I started using more functions and plugins that dealt with categories, though, so I guess I would consider if you have much of that going on. However, like some of the posts above suggests, I found it to be too problematic at times, and found a better solution incorporating tags and such. Anyway, I have no idea what I’m doing, but I would be happy to try and look at the files again and see if I can remember what I did.
