  • … so to summarize the easy win:

An option to “Attach new BuddyPress Document” to a task in CollabPress would be nice. Users can kick ideas around through the regular comments feature but when it comes to creating a structured document at the end of a project, it would be great to let them collaborate without leaving the comfort of a structured project and to-do list.

I’m still open to suggestions on keeping the other attachments private… any chance of introducing group-specific (private) media libraries to BuddyPress? πŸ™‚

    Hi Boone – sure thing.

I’m building a WP/BP site for small teams of volunteers in social housing, to help them manage small projects and organize their team meetings. The projects involve reviewing lots of documents, each of which will be attached to project tasks as an item to review. Projects will also involve each group writing up their findings – ideally saving their work-in-progress [a document] as an attachment to a project task (e.g. “Write up review findings”).

Both the input documents and the output document will contain sensitive information so I can’t leave different groups’ documents all stored in the same media library – not without some pretty hefty restrictions on accessing media… which would probably prevent users attaching stuff in the first place.

The second part of each project (writing up a collaborative document as a team) is an obvious candidate for BuddyPress Docs but I would like it to be attached to a task so that over time the users don’t lose it. In other words, if they can remember the title of the project then they can find their documents again. That might sound odd to seasoned IT users but the target audience for this site are _not_ good at filing stuff.

The first requirement (attaching various documents provided by a housing authority) still requires a bit of thought as these are likely to be pdf, Word, Excel and PowerPoint… (I’m not sure how I can manage these other than to auto-categorise them somehow with CPT-Onomies based on the parent task and review.) Even with decent taxonomy I still can’t think of a way to keep the attachments private to each BP group, so I may have to go for multisite in addition to using BuddyPress for the community networking between the different groups.

I’d love to keep it all BuddyPress though. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Roger.

    @boonebgorges
Boone – are there any plans to integrate CollabPress and BuddyPress Docs, btw? That would be a potential game changer. Right now I’m designing around BP/WPMU so I can keep the task attachments for different groups in different media libraries – i.e private from each other, as each group is a separate organisation. This means using CP on a separate site per group.

Using BP docs instead of, say, Word attachments might solve that as there is privacy built in. Just hoping…

    Cheers, Roger.

Marking this as resolved. Looking forward to test-driving version 1.3 on BuddyPress and multisite to see some PM awesomeness!

Thanks for a quick reply, Eric.

Just to clarify your comment “CollabPress would still work on BuddyPress enabled”… if I went with a multisite installation and only enabled BuddyPress on the root site, could I run CollabPress on the sub-sites where there would be no BuddyPress functionality? (I’m still getting up to speed with multisite, so apologies if that was a dumb question.)

I guess another way of asking the question would be, would the front-end in 1.3 work without BP installed at all?

Eric, that’s fantastic news about the new UI.

I was just composing a CP support thread about the recent interest in WP Project Manager (largely due to its BaseCamp-like GUI) and then I saw this post.

FWIW, Syrehn has posted a well thought-out comparison of the two plug-ins part-way down this thread.

Any idea when version 1.3 will be released? I’d be happy to do some beta testing… πŸ™‚

Agreed. (Sounds a bit like BP GTM, which has those settings).

I know you (Tareq) said you’re not a big fan of BuddyPress, but… uploaded files would also need to be hidden from everyone except members of the BP group that owns the project. For example, I’m working on a site with a number of private groups, all of which may want to run projects, so the file- (and project / task / comment, etc) visibility would need to respect the group privacy settings of each BP group.

    Hi Paul,

Maybe I missed something too… I just created an award on Achievements 3.0 beta 2. That went fine but I have no idea (and can’t see any visual cues) on how to award the award to a user.

That said, there is only one user – me (it’s a new site) – and the award is “sys admin” and I’m trying to award it to myself… (that sounds really sad but I just wanted to see how the plug-in worked!)

I’m using BP 1.6.3 and WP 3.5. Thanks.

So, Tareq… given everything that’s been said over the last couple of weeks, have we convinced you to build a front end yet?

    πŸ™‚

I suspect that most of us on this thread want BaseCamp – integrated into WordPress so we can build our own site around it and apply our own branding and (give or take a Premium plug-in fee) have it for free. That’s understandable – 37 Signals have done a great job of keeping it simple and easy to use (and the ethical question is an interesting one that I’m going to side-step here). Many other PM plug-ins are tagged with BaseCamp because the authors know that is what people are looking for.

The point I’m making is this… BaseCamp is (from memory) ALL front end. Period. If you own a project you get to do more stuff with it than a team member or client but you get to do it with the same interface the user sees and it looks like the rest of the site. It’s a fantastic user experience. That’s what I’m looking for in a PM plug-in.

For me, the front end / back end debate is all about the user experience. On the front end, you have a set of pages and features brought together in a theme that guides a user where they need to go, to the information they need and are allowed access to, and keeps them away from any scaffolding as they look round your lovely show house. (Yes, I’m probably mixing my metaphors here.) Sending a user to the admin screens with their different look and feel kinda stops the tour and says “oh, hang on, I haven’t built that bit yet” and walks them out past the building site to go and see the bit they wanted to use. Sure it’s functional to use bits of the admin screen but who ever set out to create an ugly user experience?

So… The perfect PM plug-in would be this GUI, made available to BuddyPress users on the front end? A bit like the best bits of WP Project Manager and CollabPress all rolled into one? Both open source projects?

    Hmmm. Food for thought.

Another +1 here. Looks like there are a few BaseCamp fans here on WP!

+1 for front end capability! This plug-in has captured what is so good about BaseCamp… Now please can we give it to the users as well as the admins? πŸ™‚

If you could integrate it with BuddyPress too then that would be a game changer. Great looking plug in and very handy video too. Thanks.

+1 from me – I think that’s a great suggestion. It would be very handy for a site I’m building too, which will require organisations to sign up before their members can be added to the site (and to organisation-specific groups)… So the message shown to logged out users will need to reflect this.
