In reply to: Why have “register” on a blog?I have the same question – why bother registering? First-time commenters need to be approved, but it seems like the only people who are actually registering are spammers or scrapers. I don’t want to piss off any legit registered users, but what are they actually getting by registering? Would I lose anything by not allowing people to register?
Thanks,
Andrew

In reply to: Can’t loginI forgot to mention that I have also tried the obvious “forgot your password?” link and logging in through login.php instead of the usual admin log in.

Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Can’t loginI’m having the same problem and have tried:
1) Thomas’ method of renaming the plugins directory
2) Using the emergency PHP code
3) Reinstalling the WordPress files (many times) and the database file
4) Editing the user info in the database with phpMyAdmin as described in the codex. (this offered the best clue, as the editing didn’t seem to work and it just kept defaulting to the original values like it was somehow locked).None of this has worked. ???
I’m currently trying to update from 2.5.1 to 2.8, but in the past have had the same problem, which is why I haven’t updated in so long. After having a similar problem with 2.7x, I reinstalled 2.5.1 which worked. I seem permanently stuck in 2.5.1!
The website itself (www.helifreewasatch.com) is currently viewable with 2.8, but as I can’t log in and update it, it is a moot point.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

In reply to: Captions are not showing upI think I do, although I’m not exactly sure what a “samplegallery” is. I’m using NG Gallery, and on one posting, which is still up on the front page, there is a gallery of photos (link below).
http://www.straightchuter.com/2008/06/ski-mountaineering-in-iceland-photos/Could the issue be with the NG Gallery plugin, or a setting in it that I’m not turning on?
Thanks fuggi!

In reply to: Captions are not showing upI also have a similar question – when I insert a photo, a dialog box shows up with options for “title” “caption” and “description” and while the title changed the mouse-over name, nothing seems to happen with the caption. ?? Is there a way to make it appear?
I’m using WP 2.5.1 with a K2 R6 theme and the site address is:

In reply to: How to add a forum to my site? Thanks mikey1 and newdirt. I like the idea of bbpress as a sister product to WP, but am intimidated by the installation process. For reference, WP’s “Famous Five-Minute Install” took me three tries and five days. For this reason alone, the Simple Forum Plugin looks good.
Any opinions on phpBB with WP?

In reply to: Plugins not showing up – variation on a themeAlright – I just answered my own question.
Due to multiple attempts at setting up the site, the original party who installed WP created two installations in two directories with very similar names. I was FTP’ing to the wrong site.
Ooops!
Happy turns,
Andrew
