Sitekit Error
-
When I go to Site Kit by Google and click Complete Analytics Activation. I get the message “Error: We’ve detected there’s already an existing Analytics tag on your site (ID UA-31289238-1), but your account doesn’t seem to have access to this Analytics property. You can either remove the existing tag and connect to a different account, or request access to this property from your team.” I want to connect our website to our Google Analytics account but can’t get past this. Thank you.

Hello, thanks for getting in touch. I’d be happy to help you with this.
This message is normal when there is an existing Analytics property on your site. The property UA-******38-1 is what I can currently see on your site. This may be from another Google account or elsewhere.
In order to determine the source of the snippet can you share the following:
- Do you have any other Google accounts, or is there are other WordPress administrators of this site?
- Do you recall setting up Analytics previously on this site, before setting up Site Kit – maybe through your WooCommerce integration?
- Can you share your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
Once we know the above we can advise on this further.
The site health status is good and also recommends removing old unused themes and plugins. We have multiple accounts with Google Analytics and our WordPress page which makes it tricky. I have not set up Analytics as it was someone in the company many years ago who set this all up. And we never had Google Analytics work and we are trying to now. WooCommerce is what they are using for our product page.
Thanks for your response. If you could share your site health using the private form that would be very helpful.
If you are able to contact the person who set up Analytics on the site originally then you could ask them to provide you access to the property.
If that is not an option then you will need to locate where the Analytics code snippet has been added to your site and remove it. Here are some places to check for this:
- Your theme configuration options (typically via your themes customizer). I coudn’t find any Google Analytics specific configurations from checking the theme theme which it looks like you have active
- Your theme files, in particular header.php (appearance > theme editor . header.php)
- Other third party plugins with Analytics integration – including your WooCommerce plugins.
Please let me know if you have any further questions about the above.
I do not know how to check and use the Theme Editor but I filled out the form you sent. My guess is that is has something to do with WooCommerce and how Google Analytics is set up.
Thanks for the information. Yes it’s possible that Analytics could have been set up on the site in the past using WooCommerce.
To check if this is the case then please could you go to your WooCommerce plugin > Settings > Integration. If Analytics was set up with the plugin then there should be a Google Analytics section. See here.
If there is then remove the tracking ID and save the changes. Once done, try going through the Site Kit setup once more.
If the Analytics section hasn’t been configure there then I can troubleshoot further for you.
There’s only a MaxMind Geolocation section under the integration. Is there another way I can connect the site kit to google analytics.
Okay thanks for letting me know. To determine what is placing the current Analytics code on your site could you please go through the following steps:
- Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
- Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”. (This will temporarily deactivate other plugins and switch to a default theme – for you only, as a logged in user).
- Search your sites source code, I suspect you won’t find any Analytics snippet placed (Right click on your homepage, click on “View Page Source”). See this video showing you how to search for your snippet.
- Back in troubleshooting mode click on the “Enable” option next to any your other plugins one at a time, before then visiting your sites source code once more and checking does the snippet remain (each time). You’ll also need to refresh the source code screen each time.
- If you are able to locate the snippet in your source code you’ll know which plugin if any has placed this snippet (the one you last enabled via troubleshooting mode above). If you’re unable to determine a plugin is responsible continue below to check your theme.
- Back in troubleshooting mode select a different theme, the theme normally activated on your site.
- Search the source code once mode (Please refresh the page before checking)
- If the snippet appears that means the Analytics tracking snippet is placed in your theme files directly or alternatively a theme configuration.
I appreciate there are a lot of steps here so please do let me know if you have any questions.
We found that the snippet comes from Site Kit by Google. And that is the only plugin that puts the tag snippet in. So it is in our system which is good? But it still won’t let us connect to Google Analytics for some reason. We still get the message “Error: We’ve detected there’s already an existing Analytics tag on your site (ID UA-31289238-1), but your account doesn’t seem to have access to this Analytics property. You can either remove the existing tag and connect to a different account, or request access to this property from your team.” When we click Complete Analytics Activation. What should we do?
Thanks a lot for running through these checks and providing further information. This looks like that Site Kit was set up by another WordPress site administrator.
You can either remove the existing tag and connect to a different account, or request access to this property from your team.”
As mentioned above you have two options which are:
- You can request access to the connected property from the person who set this up. Do you know this user? If so I would suggest making contact with them and asking for access to the property. You should be able to find their details in the users section.
- Alternatively, you can remove the current Analytics snippet but please be aware that the person who set this up may be using it.
Hope this helps but do let me know if you have any further questions.
I deleted it and reinstalled it and still get the same message. I noticed when I am not in Trouble Shoot Mode and click the regular page source of the website that theres another UA.
<script> (function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){ (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o), m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m) })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-31289238-1', 'auto'); ga('send', 'pageview');The Google one I installed says
:{“version”:”5.8.1″,”major”:5,”minor”:8},”trackingAllowed”:false,”trackingEnabled”:false,”trackingID”:”UA-130569087-3″};Thanks for the update. The UA-130569087 tag is a Site Kit Analytics anonymize snippet. This appears for logged in users only and doesn’t impact reporting or any other snippets.
I deleted it and reinstalled it and still get the same message.
If you removed the existing snippet then you should only be able to select any existing properties from your own Analytics account, so this is unusual. With that if you’re happy to remove the snippet mentioned (which you don’t have access to) can you please disconnect Analytics in full (Site Kit > Settings > Analytics > Edit > Disconnect Analytics from Site Kit) before then connecting the Analytics module once more? When doing so you’ll be asked to connect to your own Google Analytics account, whereby you can then connect your preferred property.
If you’re unsure on the above let me know. Feel free to share a screen recording of the above if you wish so we can see what’s occurring if you run into any issues. You can use a service such as Loom or RecordIt to share.
Note also that if you do remove the existing property you may wish to communicate with the other WP admin user who may have setup Site Kit with that property. It looks like there are 2 connected users, one being yourself. It’s possible they may have data associated with that property.
Let me know if you have any questions with the above.
Here you can see the problem is we can’t connect our analytics page to our wordpress page
Many thanks for sharing, very useful indeed. Based on your recording it looks like this property UA-*****238 exists on your site already – prior to setting up Site Kit (this is also evident when checking your site source code and using tagassistant.google.com).
While we can try and determine the source of snippet once more let’s try troubleshoot any permissions issue as an alternative, based on the video recording you provided. From the Analytics platform directly (analytics.google.com) can you perform a search for that property (UA-31289238-1) using the toolbar at the top of the page. Please do this from a Chrome browser incognito window, logging into Google Analytics using the same email you’ve used to setup Site Kit.
After performing a search please share whether you see results for that property. This will help us to confirm there are no issues with permissions or issues in relation to browser caching or multiple Google accounts.
Let me know how you get on with the above. Feel free to perform another recording if you wish. You can share any such recording privately using the form you previously used if preferred.

Our website property comes up as (UA-143282599-1)
In that case you’ll need to remove the snippet that’s already on your website before connecting that property via Site Kit.
How do I search for the other property. I can’t find the tool bar?
I’ve created a video of how to search for a property below. If you don’t have access to that property that exists on your website then it will state “No matching reports”.
https://recordit.co/DiIqVMcJPjIn order to locate the source of the existing snippet which you need to remove unfortunately you’ll need to check your plugins, theme configurations or theme files as suggested above. Using the steps provided above with the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin this is a great way to find the snippet, which you can then remove.
If you’re unsure on the above let me know.
