It is not a problem with the thumbnail generation at all, since no thumbnails are created. The original image is inserted and just scaled down by html-parameters to thumbnail-size.
This is not wanted of course, since the frontpage-size and loading times are bloated with this downscaled but not reprocessed images.
Obvioulsy the media manager does not reprocess the images into thumbnails. The rescaling leads to low quality thumbnails.
Further the media manager radiobuttons to position images in the article (left, middle, right) have no effect and I have to position the images again in the editor via the image-button.
All suggestions from the sticky concerning the image manager have been read and tried if they applied. No change.
Maybe someone could at least recognize this problem. And frankly: I don’t want to read anything about “it’s not a bug it’s a feature” or “your server is the problem”. 2.3.3 worked just fine; yes, I know, “WP 2.5 is in fact a new software”. So what? Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken.

In reply to: 2.5 admin backend annoyingDisabled the flash uploader with the plugin, still no change, still no thumbnails are created, just the original image inserted and scaled down.
1. Make sure you uploaded all the WordPress files correctly. Really, this is probably the most common upgrade problem.
2. Clear your browser cache, restart your browser. Do it twice. Browser caches can be persistent little things.
3. Update your Adobe Flash to the latest version: Flash
4. IE has specific known issues. Download these two files, replace them in your WordPress installation: IE-Fix
5. Another known issue is where the media buttons don’t appear at all. This happens when you have an older plugin interfering with the JavaScript. I encountered this problem with an older version of WP-Amazon, but any plugin loading its own jQuery can cause the issue. Disable your plugins and see if the buttons appear. If so, reactivate one by one until they don’t appear any more. Upgrade all your plugins as well.
6. Worst case… Disable the flash uploader for now, using this plugin: No-Flash-Uploader
Been there, did that, got the shirt, problem persists.

In reply to: Can’t Upload Pics–Do the Devs Know?Well, it does not work completely on my live site and it does not on my local XAMPP. If it works for you: be happy.
XAMPP is no real criterium anyway as the configuration is quite different to those used by hosters, so you cannot really use that as a proof of “no bugs”.
The definition if something is a bug or not is a superfluous philosophical discussion. Again: In 2.3.3 it worked, in 2.5 it does not. If it is a coding bug or bad programming (technical not a bug) is not the point. Something that worked ceased to do so.
Most of the people would be happy to go back to 2.3.3, but with the statement that there will be no security updates anymore for that, this is not an option. So, if you like it or not, you have to rely all these problems to the developers, if they are bugs in your opinion or not.
I would really like to see what would happen, if each and everyone posts into trac, as you suggested above. That would render it inoperable. This forum is to filter bugs, design flaws and other problems and you should help with that and not bully people looking for help, because a perfectly working software turned into a heap of [censored].

In reply to: Can’t Upload Pics–Do the Devs Know?If you are not willing to help people with lower technical expertise and bear that they may ask dumb seeming questions then you are probably wrong in a support forum. Support means ppl without much knowledge asking questions. If you think the questions are dumb then you are the one acting wrong. Help them to rephrase and do not get all grumpy at them.
The problem in quite some cases IS WordPress 2.5.
Why? Because 2.3.3 worked just fine. If it stops working in 2.5 the problem does not lie with any servers, but only with WP2.5. Why? Because 2.3.3 worked just fine.
To say “if you don’t like it, use another one” is a very unprofessional attitude from someone who should help other people, if you excuse me for saying so.
And again: 2.3.3 worked, 2.5 in many aspects does not and not all of the problems are server issues or wrong handling. You can see that easily if you look through the posts her in this SUPPORT forum.
If you cannot bear all those questions by people pleading for help you maybe should lean back, drink a beer and breathe a few times, and hope it gets better…

I tested it: Does not work. Importing an xml exported from 2.5 into 2.3.3 leads to a blank page.
Just great…
So if I have to rebuild everything from scratch anyway, I will not use WP again. 2.3.3 will not be supported anymore and 2.5 is [censored] … absolutely not to my liking.

you can see the same image as thumbnail generated with 2.3.3 under

the older one is smooth while the newer one is obviously not antialiased.
I would not call that “improved”.
Edit: Had a look with firebug: Now I’m beginning to see what the problem is. There is no thumbnail generated, the original image is scaled down instead.
Edit: The media manager seems not to work correctly anyway, since the image positioning in the article does nothing, I have to position it with the WYSIWYG-editor after inserting it into the text.

In reply to: thumbnail antialiasWell, it seems with the myriads of bugs that came with the introduction of WP 2.5 (you only have to look around in this forum) something like this seems to be a minor problem.
To me it is a major nuisance and with the way the backend and editor design decisions go, it seems to me I have to look for another blogging software.
It was fun while it lasted.

In reply to: What happens if we don’t want to use 2.5?I could not agree more with vanillatree, the new backend is a desaster.
If it stays that way I will change to another blogging solution, there are more than enough out there that match WordPress. Until now I prefered WP, but with the awful decisions in the backend, other may be more suitable to my needs and wants.
A blogging software should help me posting, not hindering me, as WP 2.5 now does.
And I need to change the algorithm or the settings. Pre 2.5 thumbnails were looking fine, now they are highly pixelated and look ugly.
So where can one change that?

What is that? Did you change the algorithm or the image-manipulation package used?

In reply to: 2.5 admin backend annoyingHaving the categories under the editor (so I have to scroll on my 1680×1050) and having to wait for a popup to just insert an image instead of just inserting it is nothing I will get used to, it is something I will not even tolerate.
What about usability? If you do not see the categories users are most likely to more often just forget to set a category.
Is it not possible to move the category-div to the admin-sidebar? Cannot be so hard. I would look into the code, but I do not want to include any hacks that get overwritten with the next update (which is likely to come soon, seeing all those bugs in the backend).

Admin-GUI by no means more accessible or more ordered, you find nothingAnd my biggest concern is the new post-GUI: EVERYTHING lined up in one row? gimme a break! categories UNDER the post, so i have to scroll? Image-insertion in a popup??? You cannot be serious?
I installed Fluency to get the admin panel a little more bearable, but I will definitely go back to 2.3.3, I certainly hope there will be security-updates for that version. If not, I will probably switch to another software altogether.
A pity, since I tested quite some blog softwares and WordPress was my favourite…
