In reply to: Added New User, But They Aren’t Able to Login! You’re using a version which I don’t myself, but I think there were various posts in the last couple of weeks about this sort of problem. Did you try a search for 2.1 login loop or some such?

In reply to: SQL Error 28You could, certainly, if you have no compelling reason to run your own domain.
Alternatively, if you go with wordpress.com, you can pay them something (not sure how much, don’t do that myself – drmike where are you when you’re needed?) to use your own domain name for your wordpress.com blog, which may be an option to look into.
I don’t know what you’re paying currently, but there are various places (NOT godaddy or dreamhost!) which are less than $100 US a year for good hosting.

In reply to: Category post locationYou don’t have to do another db – you do another install, yes, but in the wp-config.php file you give the tables a different prefix so it’s a different blog entirely.
Yes there are ways to exclude categories and posts in those categories from displaying, but honestly, setting up a second wp install with a different db prefix is way simpler.

In reply to: SQL Error 28*sigh* Well, gee. Not much of a host then….
It refers to the amount of storage available on (generally) your shared space with your host. It means that that space is full – and your host doesn’t know this?
So you email your support back, and you tell them that you KNOW the storage has a space problem, and you EXPECT them to fix it NOW, since you are paying them…. etc. etc. ad infinitum ad nauseam.
And before you pay them for another month or whatever, find a decent host.

In reply to: How to Save Old PostsTutorial here: http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/backup/ – that’s the best way.
Forum: Plugins
In reply to: Displaying a hierchy of pages?Um. You don’t understand about searching the forum for posts about this?
Big search box at the top…. and as far as not using a plugin, you can’t do breadcrumbs without one, but you can do page heirarchies: Template_Tags/wp_list_pages – as far as it goes.
But I don’t get why not plugins…. that’s the whole point to the way wp works: there’s some base functionality but the rest of it is handled by plugins.

In reply to: apostrophe creates database SQL syntax errorWell, geesh. That’s one for the books. I honestly haven’t run across this before (2.5 years using wp and posting here), so I’m sceptical it’s a wp bug. However, just for kicks n grins, you could post it to the bug trac: http://trac.wordpress.org; and also post to the wp-hackers list which you can find how to do from http://lists.automattic.com/ – people there are far more able to determine what sort of bork this really is than I am.
Wish I could be of more help…. sorry!

In reply to: WYSIWYG ignoring or reinterpreting HTMLAs far as I’ve been able to determine, the only way to post “pure” html tags without wp insisting it knows better is to work within the database using phpmyadmin. And that is NOT an option for the faint of heart – one misplaced semi-colon among other possible things will bork the whole shebang – and your only option at that point is to drop all the tables and import a backup dump – assuming you have one.
So if you’re going to do this (and I admit, I do it myself on a regular – that is, daily – basis), make sure you have a dump before you start.
You have been warned…. “DANGER Will Robinson”…..

In reply to: PLEASE A BETTER SUPPORT FORUM SYSTEMAh! I was out in left field, apparently!
As to rogue posters, yeah, we’ve had the occasional one in the last 2.5 years, but they don’t get far fast, and they certainly don’t do the “flood and kill” operations phpBB is subject to.

In reply to: Replacing the default header (oh yes, I’ve searched)Everyone here is a volunteer. That’s it. We try to offer help as and when we can.
Trying to tweak the “default” wp theme is an exercise in frustration. The best thing to do is go to http://themes.wordpress.net/, check off your requirements for a theme in the selection sidebar, then search on them and find a theme that meets most of your look/layout requirements.
Tweaking most any theme from there for graphics etc. will be an infinity easier than doing same with the “default”. I’ve been using wp for 2.5 years, I develop, design, and manage websites on a daily basis, I write clean valid code, and I won’t touch kubrick with the longest pole in the universe.

In reply to: SQL Error 28They both “shade the truth”. Really. Error 28 from table handler IS a host-side problem. Who’s your host?
You can try repairing the db yourself using the mysql/phpmyadmin interface, but it’s less than a 2second job for your host provider.
