Did you try resetting your permalinks? Sounds like a permalinks bork to me….

Wow. Fun, but exhausting; exhilarating but complex….

If I were doing this…. I think I’d set up a parent category for each “family line”. Then there would be sub-cats (children) below the parent, one for each contributor’s family. There could be other sub-cats as needed, branching out – just like a genealogical “tree”.

Then I’d want to limit actual posting in the child cats to given individuals – those who would be responsible for generating family branch content in the beginning – this would be so that there would be an element of initial control, since this sort of thing can take on a life (and a head of steam!) all of its own.

Commenting of course could be more open, as others in the extended family add anecdotes, etc. to the posts.

As an adjunct, and in response to your fear of the photos becoming buried in a mass of posts and comments, consider using a gallery such as Popup Gallery to produce an “index” of photos by family galleries – this could be linked gracefully into the posting areas; it could even be set up as the opening page of the site: a photo of Great-Grandfather and Great-Grandmother at the top of the page, with other family branches below.

The Simple Forum plugin is an easy to use forum setup. It natively accesses the wordpress user data. It’s all the forum a lot of us need. It has a lot of attractive fun things which bbpress doesn’t have – so it depends on what you’re looking for really.

Well that’s pretty cool! Font size is fine for me (60-ish, 20-20 with glasses, 17″ screen at 1024×768 – it’s a tad small on my 1600×1200 non-dev screen though I still don’t have a problem reading it). Site load time was under 1 sec (wildblue lowend satband). I didn’t see any problem with scrolling, minimizing, etc. – in fact, the whole thing works very very well (note please, that I’m using a real browser as opposed to anything named “IE”….)

I’m not a fan of lime neon green, but other than that, this may be the only really “different” thing I’ve seen in a while….

Please do a search for “sidebar drop” – there are probably a thousand posts about it, most with information regarding width problems.

Well…. I’d delete all the wordpress files you uploaded, except for wp-config.php, and reupload a clean distro. Sounds like corrupted files.

Maybe search for “matt’s asides”? Seems like that plugin might do what you want more painlessly….
