Hi @patrick-b
I totally understand your concerns, I’ll be happy to bring this up for further discussion internally at our next team meeting to see if we can make some changes to the wording!
Thank you,
TimHi @gabeelliott
Thanks for reaching out!
During the setup wizard, you can select any active GA4 property that is on your Google Analytics account. If you have more than one GA4 property.
When it comes to data streams, any older ones that are deleted would not be able to be connected to. However, MonsterInsights will always attempt to connect to any existing data stream that is within a property.
If you have more than one site, each site should have its one property, not just a data stream. If you have one property for multiple sites, what occurs is the data is all dumped into one place, making it extremely difficult to review your analytics.
Both ourselves and Google recommend that you have one property per website, and one data stream per property.
Can you let me know if you’ve set up individual properties for each of your sites, with their own data streams in each one?
Also, please share a couple of the website addresses that you are having this issue on, I have a look at the authentication to see what is happening for you.
Thanks,
TimThank you for leaving a review. We do read each one that is posted.
When it comes to having Google Analytics already integrated, I noticed that before the edit was made you mentioned you were using WordPress.com for hosting. This comes with JetPack installed, however it is not by default on every WordPress installation, only those hosted on WordPress.com.
So, while, yes, some sites do come with an ability to track to Google Analytics, the majority of WordPress users do not have that option by default available to them.
I can totally understand the confusion that happened here due to that.
If you have any other thoughts, don’t hesitate to post a follow-up reply with any questions!
Thanks,
TimHi @patrick-b
Thanks for leaving a review, we do reach each and every one of them.
I totally understand your frustration here, no one likes magically appearing additional plugins!
So, we have made sure to include multiple ways to ensure that what plugins we do recommend, can be skipped or ignored.
During the setup wizard, you can select to not have them installed. Each plugin can be unchecked during one of the setup steps, or if you scroll to the bottom of the page, you can skip it entirely and have nothing extra installed.
We include the option to install these additional plugins, as we either integrate directly with them or work adjacent/complementary to the plugins. Though, they aren’t required for MonsterInsights to work on your site.
If you have any other thoughts, don’t hesitate to post a follow-up reply with any questions!
Thanks,
TimHi @guyinpv
That you’re not using a multi-site setup has made things more interesting! We think we have a solution for this, but it’s going to take a little time to iron out the wrinkles.
In the meantime, there is a stop gap in manually changing the URL that is found within the data stream itself, as mentioned in my first reply above. I totally understand how annoying that it might be to change, but luckily, it’ll only need to be done the once.
If you do change the data stream URL let me know if you run into any issues.
Thanks!

TimHi @guyinpv
Thanks for reaching out.
Do you by any chance have a multi-site installation? We’ve tracked down an issue that causes this exact thing to happen. We’re currently investigating and testing for a resolution.
I apologize for any frustration that may have been caused by this.
You may try editing the URL of the data stream after you have authenticated to it within MonsterInsights. Do note, that you should not reauthenticate MonsterInsights once the URL has been changed, as you may run into an error.
Please ensure that you keep MonsterInsights updated for any fixes that will be rolled out.
Thanks,
TimHi @lukedouglas,

https://www.monsterinsights.com/get-help/You’re welcome to just include a link to this post, if you’d prefer to do that.
I apologize that we’re not able to respond to paid version questions here in the WordPress.org support forums for the free version, but I really appreciate your help!
Thanks 🙂
Hi @samcysqd
Thanks for sharing your site with me. I’ve had a look, and it seems there is a caching or script optimizing plugin that causing MonsterInsights to be malformed within your page’s source.
Instead of loading our frontend.min.js file another has been generated that has a long string of alphanumeric letters, this is causing our script variables to be undefined.
Can you please ensure that you are excluding the following within your minification/optimization/cache plugin:
/google-analytics-for-wordpress/assets/js/*.js
http://www.googletagmanager.comAfter you have done that, please make sure you clear any site cache’s to load the newest version of your site pages.
If you have any issues after that, let us know!
Thanks,
TimHi @dumbpress
When it comes to any additional plugin that might be installed via the MonsterInsights setup wizard, the most likely ones are:
- AIOSEO
- OptinMonster
- UserFeedback
- WP Forms
At any time they can be removed, like any other WordPress plugin.
When going through the setup wizard, you can uncheck the options to install these if you ever need to use MonsterInsights on another site. Just uncheck these 4 items or scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘Skip for now’.

Hi @anotheropus
Thanks for contacting us, and I’m sorry you received that error.
Can you please follow the steps below to resolve this error:
- Log into your WordPress site
- Go to Insights » Settings under Google Authentication tab
- First click on “Disconnect MonsterInsights” – https://a.supportally.com/i/IWuPCk
- You may need to press “Force Disconnect” if it does not disconnect the first time.
- Then click on “Connect MonsterInsights“- https://a.supportally.com/i/XAEv92 and follow the steps that come after to connect to a Google Analytics property that was previously created.
Once you have completed those steps, you should not see that error any longer.
Let me know if you run into issues with that!
Thanks,
TimHi @plainrane and @jesseislil,
This issue affecting users who were dual tracking in reverse to what was recommended. This means using UA as primary and GA4 as secondary, rather than the other way around.
Because the API endpoints for UA are pretty much gone at this point, your version of MonsterInsights is trying to still reach what is no longer there.
To resolve this, please make sure you are updated to the latest version of MonsterInsights, and authenticate into Google Analytics once again.
Thanks,
TimHi @mohammedays
When tracking manually, you are missing out on the reports being generated, as well as a number of events that are generated server side that are only sent via the API rather than frontend. We always recommend authenticating via MonsterInsights when possible due to this.
There are also a number of events and custom definitions that are generated by MonsterInsights within the Google Analytics property that are not created until you are authenticated (this can result in a loss of tracking events).
You will need to make sure of a couple of things. Firstly, that you’ve entered not just the GA4 measurement ID but as well as the Measurement API Secret as well.
You should also make sure that your site URL matches exactly within the data stream, typically MonsterInsights takes care of this for you, as well as site time, location, etc.
Let me know if you have any other questions.Thank you,
Tim
