In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Thousands of spam topics in bbPressHi there,
Looking into the details of your missed spam submissions, it’s looking like you are running a version of bbPress that is affected by a bug that we’ve reported (and was fixed in https://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2858), but the fix was not included in a major release yet. If you’re willing, you could upgrade to the current bbPress release candidate at https://bbpress.org/download/, which does include the fix. Note that a release candidate is not a final release and may still include some bugs that the team is working on fixing, but I confirmed that it does include the fix for sending titles to Akismet.

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Plugin wont updateUnfortunately, the error is with how the site’s files are setup, and I’m not sure what, if any, options your host allows you to remedy this. What host are you with?

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Plugin wont updateHi there,
The PHP update suggestion from your host is “interesting” as it was unlikely to help, since it sounds a permissions issue. The problem is that WordPress does not have access to write new/updated files to the plugins directory.
There’s a long documentation page in the WordPress Codex about it, along with examples. It’s a tad dense, though: https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions.
Is the Akismet plugin the only plugin you’re getting this error message for, or is it the same with other ones, or when trying to update WordPress itself?

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Thousands of spam topics in bbPressIn the meantime, just a note that a sudden and large influx of spam is often the result of the key having been disabled on our end (payment issues, etc). You can verify the state of your Akismet API key by visiting your account at https://akismet.com/account/, or testing your key via the related API endpoint explained at https://akismet.com/development/api/#verify-key.

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Does Akismet anti spam use ban lists?Akismet does not share any of the data passed to it, or gathered from, with anyone publicly, or privately. And we have very short retention periods for any data that’s reported to us as missed spam or false positives. The world of spam is an ever changing one, static ban lists are not always ideal. That’s one of the reasons why we created Akismet, which is ever learning. 🙂
Public ban lists can be a tricky game. Often obsolete (especially with rotating IPs, VPNs, TOR, etc), dubious sources, and so on. On the other hand, they are quite heavily used for email spam, though, but that’s because they detect mail servers, not users like with content spam.
whatismyipaddress.com seems to have an IP checker and lists the source of the data underneath. That might get you going, if you’re still looking for some. I’m not aware of anything Ninja Forums specific, though.
Hope this helps.

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Updated Akismet Now Warning in HeaderHi there.
Haven’t seen that one before. Could you disable the Akismet plugin and see if the warning disappears, so we can be sure that plugin is the issue?
Feel free to reach out to us via http://akismet.com/contact if the issue persists, so you can pass us more details about your setup, and we’ll figure it out.
Thanks,

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Re-testing and evaluation in progressHi there @catsfoto1se.
Although I see your point, you could actually take that as a good sign that the API is doing “the right thing”. The test messages you sent do not meet any of the criteria to be considered spam, especially when coupled with the fact that you sent them yourself, which said API is aware of. Of course, the cumulation of it started cluing it in that it should still do something about it.
We invite you to turn it on and let it work on a real-life stream of spam that will inevitably pour into any public site, and see how it performs in a realistic scenario before making your judgement call. I’m fairly certain you’ll be happily surprised.
On a related note, if you want to keep testing, but not be classified as a spammer yourself over the long term, I suggest you send
is_test=truealong with your queries, so the API knows to give you realistic results, but not make long term assessment that could see you blocked from many places at once as the outcome.Cheers,

@tboley: Hi again.
Some of the missing strings have now been approved, but the German community translators have mentioned to me that you might want to look into also running the following plugin, to comply with German law:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/akismet-privacy-policies/
That should be more useful to you than just having the strings translated/approved.
We’ll look into either doing it straight into the Akismet plugin ourselves, or maybe pointing site admins to that extra plugin when the site is ran in German.

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Domain parameter is missingThanks for taking the time to both find this, and report it.
Fixed in https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/1944189
I gave you props on the changeset. 🙂Still working on finding the proper moderator to approve the strings. Hang in there. 🙂
@tboley: you’re right, it seems the strings are still waiting for the German community translator to approve them in both the standard and formal German translations. I’ll ping the internationalization group to see if they can get in touch with her/him and have that done. Thanks for the nudge.
