  • Aha!!! Tried the plug-ins, and my problems cleared as soon as I deactivated the WYSI-WordPress plugin.

No, I don’t. Everything appears to load as designed. I’ve just tried it again, and get no errors.

    Did that. Makes no difference.

In either Safari or Firefox, I can enter text only if the RTF is unchecked in my profile. With RTF unchecked, I get all the buttons but no visual/code tabs. When RTF is checked, I get only some of the buttons, I get the tabs, but they aren’t clickable, and what’s stranger, I cannot enter any text. I can enter the title of the post, but nothing in the body. I have reinstalled wht TinyMCE stuff, cleared my caches, everything suggested here. Nothing works.

Ah, and now I’ve found the setting in my Firefox preferences that led me to believe the “target” attribute was not working. Ya know, there are days when you just seem to know nothing…

    Thanks, everyone.

Many thanks, Otto. From now on, it’s rel=”external” for me.

I’m curious. What are the arguments against allowing me to specify that a link opens in a new window or tab (depending on your browser settings)? When I am navigating someone else’s site, I find it annoying if I have to back my way through four screens to get to whatever I was originally reading, and as a Web author, I want to avoid anything that takes people away from my page so that they might not find their way back.

Wow, how strange…I think I’ve found a quirk of Firefox. Based on your observation, Zoutesnor, I viewed my site in Safari and the tag works just fine. My knowledge of HTML, obviously, is limited, and I thought the problem related to where the “target” tag was placed in the code for the link. Now, I suspect, the problem is Firefox doesn’t respond to the tag.

Has this tag been deprecated? Is there a better way to do this?

Syncbox, yer a bona fide genius. That was the problem. Thanks a million.

Okay, Bluehost tech support just got on the case, and found that “for some reason, your database user wasn’t tied to your database. I have tied the two together and your site is now working.” And, indeed, I can now access my site through my browser, though quotation marks in the body of posts have become question marks.

Now, however, when I try to log in through the wp-admin/index.php, I get the login screen; I enter username and password, click “login,” and get only a fresh login screen. Sigh. Any ideas now?

I tried, for lack of anything else to do, deleting my sql database, then following the WordPress instructions for restoring it. Didn’t work. I get the same message. When I check my awstats through my new host’s cpanel, I find that yesterday I had 205 visits. How can my page be up and taking visitors, but I can’t access it, either through my wp-admin.php or by typing the URL in my browser?

Thank you for your reply, Cypher.

Yes. My domain name, database name, and username all have stayed the same, which means the config.php file is correct. I uploaded all the proper files. PhpMyAdmin shows all the correct SQL database tables in place. The wp_options table has the correct settings. I’ve cleared my cache.

Still, I get the WordPress “can’t select database” screen. Hence my bafflement.

vnbPaul: Yes, I’m aware of it. When I know I’m going to have a short quote, I don’t use the

    tag. Thanks.

Thanks for alerting me to the problem and the cause, sonria. I really had no idea the page was displaying poorly. Damn those end tags!

Thank you for the compliment, Ilione. To the extent that a writer can pretend to a design aesthetic, I wanted something clean, uncluttered, with white space and a basic color scheme. The red initial caps are meant to resemble rubrics, something I picked up from study of medieval books of hours. I’ve thought about switching to san-serif type because it’s nice and clean in electronic display, but I like the idea of a serif typeface as a link to classical print. Any opinions?

    Thanks again, everyone.

Page now validates for xhtml transitional, which I hope clears up any problems. Now to work on the CSS.
