Hi WPYogi.
No, I haven’t made any mods to the Default template.
Maybe this will give some sort of clue as to what’s going on. When I copy the FP Template file from the Parent to the Child theme, all the widgets in the sidebar on the pages using the Default template disappear, and in their place the footer widgets appear. Not sure if that’s a helpful bit of info or not, but just thought it might be…
When you refer to “double-checking the templates”, I’m not sure what you mean. Do you mean checking that the FP Template file I have copied over to the Child theme is exactly the same as the parent original? If not, would you mind clarifying, please?
Cheers
RossHi WPYogi – great to hear from you, and yet again to be a beneficiary of your excellent advice! 🙂 Thank you!
And I gotta say…fabbo! The Comments box is now displayed on all FP Template pages! I’d given up, so you really have come to the rescue with this one!
IMPORTANT QUESTION: I know it’s a no-no, but I made your code change in the parent FP Template file. The reason is that when I copied this file over to my Child Theme, it messed with the sidebars on pages using the Default template (ie: most widgets disappeared from the sidebar).
Should I be copying the entire Templates folder over to the Child Theme (obviously, with the FP Template file inside), perhaps? If not, and this is a rare case where mods work only on the parent theme, I guess I will need to keep doing your mod every time the Twenty Twelve Theme is upgraded?
Again, I’m really so grateful to you for giving me the elusive solution to the Comments display with the FP Template.
Big cheers!
RossAh! Thank you, whoever put my code in the correct format and added the advice at the end of my post above! I didn’t even know those code buttons existed!
Any comments on the code re adding footer widgets to the “Full-width Page Template, No Sidebar”, pls? Pretty please?
Cheers
RossThanks for your response, Seacoast Web Design Member.
I’m not sure how to post code as you have. I’ll try posting it here, but I suspect I need to use some other method. If so, would you mind letting me know what I should be doing to post code like this, please?
My “Full-width Page Template, No Sidebar” code is as follows:
<?php /** * Template Name: Full-width Page Template, No Sidebar * * Description: Twenty Twelve loves the no-sidebar look as much as * you do. Use this page template to remove the sidebar from any page. * * Tip: to remove the sidebar from all posts and pages simply remove * any active widgets from the Main Sidebar area, and the sidebar will * disappear everywhere. * * @package WordPress * @subpackage Twenty_Twelve * @since Twenty Twelve 1.0 */ get_header(); ?> <div id="primary" class="site-content"> <div id="content" role="main"> <?php while ( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ?> <?php get_template_part( 'content', 'page' ); ?> <?php comments_template( '', true ); ?> <?php endwhile; // end of the loop. ?> </div><!-- #content --> </div><!-- #primary --> <?php get_footer(); ?>

In reply to: Twenty Twelve frontpage templates not showing comments formHi Christian
Apologies for not acknowledging your post above until now. I’ve been away for a week.
I tried your revised code, but the results were as before: widgets disappeared from sidebars throughout the site, and no comments box displayed on any page using the FP Template.
I have tried disabling my few plugins – made no difference.
So, I guess it’s time for me to give up and accept that the Twenty Twelve FP Template is not designed to display comments – at least, not on my site!
I guess the only other strategy I could research is to add footer widgets to the ‘Full-width Page Template, No Sidebar’ template (which is displaying a Comments box, but doesn’t have footer widgets by default).
Thanks for your effort, anyway.
Cheers!

In reply to: Twenty Twelve frontpage templates not showing comments formThanks for getting back, Christian.
I tried your first code suggestion – didn’t work, and messed with the sidebars of pages displaying them.
I can’t find a file called something-comments.php in either the parent or child theme. Would you have any idea where it might be, please? Maybe there isn’t one in Twenty Twelve?
Cheers

In reply to: Twenty Twelve frontpage templates not showing comments formOK, I copied the front-page.php file across to my Twenty Twelve Child Theme, then added the code you recommended above the line indicated.
No sign of any Comments box. So, either I’ve done something wrong, or this is not a solution to allow FP Templates to display Comments.
Wish I could report differently.
Best

In reply to: Twenty Twelve frontpage templates not showing comments formTHANK YOU for your response, Christian1012. At least I now know there is nothing wrong with my Front Page Templates. I’d have thought it would be clearly stated somewhere that Comments are not displayed by FPTemplates by default, regardless of there being the usual option to enable them.
I’m not quite with you regarding your recommendation, though. Do you mean I should copy the Twenty Twelve page-templates folder across to my Twenty Twelve Child Theme, then make the changes you show to the front-page.php file within the Child Theme?
Or should I copy just the front-page.php file to my Child Theme then make your changes?
Or neither – is this an instance where you have to make the changes to the Twenty Twelve theme, and keep on repeating those changes every time there is an update?
Would you mind clarifying, please?
Again, I am very appreciative of your response. I’d given up…!
Cheers!

In reply to: Twenty Twelve frontpage templates not showing comments formJust one thought: I am using ‘Custom Field’ to insert different custom headers on various pages that have the Front Page Template selected. Is there any chance using Custom Field in this way might be stopping Comments from displaying, perhaps? Just a shot in the dark..

In reply to: Twenty Twelve frontpage templates not showing comments formWell, it seems no one else has come across this problem, and no one has any possible answers or suggestions as to what could be going wrong. I’m referring both to the lack of response here, and to the fact that I can find nothing on this anywhere on the web.
Last call. If anyone has even the slightest idea what could be causing comments not to display when the Twenty Twelve Front Page Template is used, would be most appreciative if you could respond.
Otherwise, I suppose I’ll just have to change to the Full-Width Page Template No Side-bar…but I really want to have footer widgets, which only appear with the Front Page Template. Sigh…

In reply to: Twenty Twelve frontpage templates not showing comments formBeen googling my ass off trying to find some explanation for this problem, but nothing. The thought just occurred to me: should the Front Page Template be used for multiple pages (which I have done), or is it supposed to be used just for the home page?
Dunno, just poking around in the dark and hoping to fluke my way to a solution, or at least an explanation. Anyone?
Cheers

In reply to: Twenty Twelve frontpage templates not showing comments formOK, first I deleted Twenty Twelve, then did a fresh install (I was getting a lot of validation errors, and had been advised some time ago by esmi to try this).
Then I did exactly as you recommended, Seacoast Web Design Member.
When I switched back to the Child Theme with all plugins deactivated, the problem was exactly the same. ie: None of the pages using Front Page Template were displaying Comments, even though they were allowed – and as before, pages using default template with Comments enabled were displaying Comments. eg: http://www.perthpunk.com/personal-perspectives/ray-de-motte-ex-black-sun/
I tried switching between the different templates on the page I just linked to and found that ‘Default’ and ‘Full-width Page Template, No Sidebar’ both displayed Comments. When I switched to ‘Front Page Template’ again no Comments box displayed.
It’s got me baffled, and I don’t know what to do next. Any ideas what could be causing this problem, since with all plugins deactivated, it’s not any of them?
NB: I’ve now reactivated most of my plugins.

In reply to: fixed background displayOK, thanks simplysaru. If that’s the story, I guess I’d rather retain responsiveness and stay with the Twenty Twelve child theme.
Appreciate your clarification.
