It’s hard to say where is your problem. But it really seems to be cache. One try that would give you insights into where is the problem, is trying to check your brush through the network tab, checking the Status Code, and the file content.
On the other hand, if you changed the script version (4th argument of
wp_register_script), it should not cache.But I believe you’ll have some good insights when checking the network tab. 😉

But depending on what you mean about that, you could add as a customization to this code. 😉

It should be possible. I tested it, and it worked for me, but you have to replace the original image (the one without the size suffix). And the files should have the same extension (png, jpg, jpeg, etc.).
Also, before proceeding, I highly recommend you make a backup because any change directly in the files or in the database can cause unexpected behaviors.

It’s weird! If you are using the WordPress default features to include your media, they should have the same behavior when generating the thumbnails, because this plugin uses the
wp_generate_attachment_metadatacore function to regenerate them. This means that when you upload new media, they should have the same treatment when you’re regenerating them.And it should only delete images when the option “Delete thumbnail files for old unregistered sizes in order to free up server space. This may result in broken images in your posts and pages.” is marked and you don’t use some sizes anymore.
Anyway, my suggestion to try getting your images back is to check if they are in your
uploadsfolder, or getting it from some backup.I really hope you can get your images back! And next time when you’re using a plugin for the first time, it’s highly recommended a backup because any plugin/theme conflict can cause unexpected behaviors. 😉

Are you using the latest version of Regenerate Thumbnails? If not, it could be a problem because there’s a known error related to the “Update the content of posts to use the new sizes” option that was disabled in the latest versions. (https://github.com/Automattic/regenerate-thumbnails/issues/124)
If you think it’s unrelated, I’d like to ask you to confirm if the images are also wrong when you access them through the uploads folder. If yes, could you send us step-by-step how we could reproduce it? I tried some different approaches, and inspect the code to see where it could happen, but I didn’t find anything (the whole process work based on the attachment ID).
You could also try to disable other plugins to confirm if nothing is interfering with the filenames.

If I understood correctly, you imported locally and migrated to your site only the
wp_poststable from the database, correct? The attachments also contain some important information in the tablewp_postmeta.If you make it locally and migrate it to your site, I’d recommend making it with the whole database. Otherwise, you can have some weird problems with missing information. Or you could try again import it directly to your site.

I’m not able to reproduce your issue. Since there’s already a new version of WP, I’d recommend you update it and see if it works. I’d also recommend you disable other plugins and try to use another theme to test if something could be interfering in the process.

Not sure if I got your problem. If I understood correctly, you’re having a problem with the size of your youtube embeds only, right? If yes, it’s likely something related to your new theme because Regenerate Thumbnails will only regenerate the images that you uploaded.
