The Google Translate API requires pay if you want it to work, afaik. So if you didn’t set any payment option, it just won’t.
Its weird that one settings works and the other don’t, but I don’t have the tools to debug this from your message. You can contact me directly through transposh.org with access details to your site if you want me to further pursue this.
Regarding Yoast, yes, bug them, they might budge 🙂

Unlike your name, this is not very simple, in the past I have dealt with this issue and made sure the results went through the translation engine. I haven’t tested it with buddypress in a long while.
So to sum it up.
1. used to work, but I guess your assessment may be correct
2. I suggest you go to the our dev site and look at the commits marked with buddypress, it will give you a lead.Unfortunately, having other stuff to work on, I can’t get to this (in a reasonable timeframe) with the free support option, but if you need advice, I’ll be happy to assist.

Google without a key won’t work unless you have curl installed on your server. Do remember that creating a key will incur payments to Google
Bing is fine.
Regarding nextgen, that’s life, I can’t be compatible with everything
Same regarding yoast, we support the google sitemaps plugin, and not the other one, the developers of that plugin ignored messages on their forum regarding said issue, so what can we do?

You should probably use the translate on post feature, and the translate all button, and than just wait.

First – English must stay there, the default language is naturally a part of the languages on your site, this does not mean it will translate English to English…
Second, the entire site is translated without user action, there is also the possibility to use the translate all button at the tools settings tab
