Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Absolutely new to this…To create a page instead of a post, you log into WP as usual, and under the “Write” tab you choose “Page” instead of “Post.” The page will automatically list itself wherever the code calling for pages is listed – sidebar, nav bar, etc.

In reply to: Squeezing Extra Info into My Travel Blog’s DesignFor the sidebar, you could use lines to contain and break things up a little bit. You could also put each group of things in its own box in the sidebar, like the sidebar on the Connections theme, for example:

(Click on the Connections tab to see the theme.)

In reply to: Absolutely new to this…Check out the WP Theme Viewer:
Lots of very cool themes there, many are very easy to modify if you know a bit of basic html/php or are willing to learn.

In reply to: header still not showing upHey Kara,
Have you seen the theme viewer?
Lots of themes there to choose from, and most of them are much easier to modify than the default theme.
If you want to restore the default theme to the way it was, the best bet is to delete the current files/images for the default theme, download WP again and just upload only the files for the default theme.

In reply to: spam getting throughI’ve never used Akismet, but have always used Spam Karma and Bad Behavior together, and I’ve had almost zero issues with spam.

In reply to: Step OneDon’t delete your plugins. It would, however, be a good idea to deactivate them all temporarily while you get the new version uploaded and get the plugins put in the right place. Reactivate them one by one once you get the new version uploaded. Some plugins have not been upgraded to be compatible with WP 2.0 and up.
If you have a custom theme you prefer to use, you don’t have to delete that either, just make sure that it gets put in the right place when you’ve got all the new files uploaded.

The page looks fine in IE7 though, sidebar up where it should be.

In reply to: New Post Pushed Way Down PageAh! Well, you have to upgrade your browser then.
Your blog seems fine – I’ve also looked at it in Firefox and it’s good there, too. Also, you’re XHTML valid, so upgrade your browser and make the post again, it should come out just fine. 🙂

In reply to: does wordpress run on Windows server on IISI tell everyone to use a Unix/Linux server instead of Windows. There are certain plugins for WP that don’t work very well if the site is hosted on a Windows server, along with other slightly annoying little quirks that can pop up out of nowhere. That’s been my experience, anyway.
I don’t know how the IIS instead of Apache will affect it, I’m not that tech savvy, but am pretty sure someone around here can answer that question.

Did you have a photo in the post or something?

In reply to: Squeezing Extra Info into My Travel Blog’s DesignI’m not quite sure how much info you intend to add in, but one idea could be to make that info your tagline in the header. Another option – you could place an “About” blurb at the top of the sidebar if all you need is a couple of short sentences.
If you think you need more space than either of those options will allow, add an “About” page.

In reply to: Completely new original theme! The site appears to be working just fine in IE7, which makes that blaring pink banner at the top of the site quite annoying.
