I’ve changed the main content to Times New Roman, with the header staying in Garamond. How does that look? It’s certainly easier to read.
Sidebar. I’ve increased the space between it and the content. I don’t really want to add a line if at all possible. Does the content not create an equally dividing line by being justified at the left-hand margin?
I think a dividing line in between posts is the way to go – does someone have any pointers on a nice line, perhaps with a swirl or flourish at the ends? I could host an image of such a line, I suppose…
The links colours I will certainly play around with – see if I can come up with a more subtle variant.
I cannot really use the Read More tag – for the same reason that there are a lot of posts on the main page. Most people simply won’t click the Read More.
I cannot bump the Hart logo down either, I’m afraid; they do sponsor the site to a fair amount, and it was their choice where the logo went.

One has to be aware of one’s readership; the vast majority of people that visit the website are not particularly blog-literate, and this is endemic in the academic legal profession. Which is why very big, successful blogs like the Legal Theory Blog – http://lsolum.typepad.com/legaltheory/ – seemingly go on forever.
It’s also what Scoble does – http://scobleizer.com/ – so I can’t be in that bad company. 🙂

I’ve increased the space between the sidebar and main content. Not sure how to go about delineating between posts a bit more – I think there’s probably enough white space. Maybe a horizontal dividing line?
The green colour is, I’m afraid, here to stay; that’s the colour of the Journal itself.
I could make the font in the sidebar smaller. Thoughts?

This isn’t the place for content examination, or link trading.
Oh, and I think the site is far too saturated with Google ads.

In reply to: New Blog in Need of Review1) It’s simple. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s overwhelmingly attractive – the font is rather plain, as is the main body of the page. There’s minimalist, and then there’s just plain plain! It certainly isn’t unpleasant, however, so don’t worry (although I’m not a fan of the dark background – rather a claustrophobic feel to it).
2) I think you’ve basically achieved that (subject to point 4 below).
3) It’s alright. I don’t really like the calendar, and I think you could delineate between your recent posts by a dotted/dashed line or something to that effect.
4) I won’t comment on content or context, but it’s a little large for my taste. On a normal 1024 monitor, it goes at least halfway down the page. If you want to be content-centric, perhaps make it a little less intrusive?

MrFlora, I would suggest adding a devoted page (I couldn’t see one on your site) to both your copyright terms and a legal disclaimer. I know you have a general exclusivity clause in your footer, but a …/copyright page is usually advisable. I’m sure one of your medial lawyers will be able to draft the relevant content for you.

In reply to: Newspaper siteAttempting to beat someone over the head with an encylopaedic knowledge of a given subject is normally a fairly pointless thing to do. To do it on an internet forum about blog software goes beyond the realms of common sense.
And Marko, that you admittely state that advertisements in the media are a “modern construct” should give you a fairly decent idea of how flawed your argument is. To quote 300-year old newspapers is of little help to anyone, and to suggest that a line of Google ads across the top of the site is pervasive and obnoxious is equally absurd. I would also like to know how, in the absence of advertising, you expect a given website/TV station/newspaper/whatever, make money? Someone’s not living in the real world.

In reply to: Criticize my site!Well, it would only appeal to friends/family. It has no real direction or purpose. It tells me nothing that I cannot otherwise obtain by reading a news or technology – related website. To capture a wider audience, you need to think why they may want to read it at all. Your opinion on a topic is simply not enough; that can only work if you’re important to a number of people (think Scoble et al.)
Aesthetically, it’s a pretty much unchanged theme, so can’t really comment on that.

I am in sore need of essentially the same thing as the thread-creator was – a directory of members, searchable via keyword/category/area of interest/surname, etc.
Does anyone know of anything that might do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
