In reply to: Wp-polls: wrong “voters” count in one poll. Can’t reset.Well, that’s exactly what I want.
About twenty people have answered and I still have almost 95 voters. Multiple answers allowed.
– Does the deletion of logs affect these counters?
– From which tables is this value read from?
– Why can I not change that voters value from the admin interface? I can make the change, but it gets reset later…I must have made some horrible mistake somewhere… But I do understand how the votes/voters counters should work.

In reply to: Activated Gengo. Blog crashed. This problem is not due to Gengo. The problem appears to be in WP-Polls:
At wp-multilingual.net the author of Gengo writes:
“If that happens, the plugin you just activated has been written incorrectly. It is trying to set its language too early, before Gengo has loaded. The solution is an easy one – the call to load_plugin_textdomain() in the plugin must be moved so that it is run on the βinitβ hook.”

In reply to: How can I make my blog PrivateAre you sure that WordPress is the best tool for that? Perheaps something with built-in access control would suit you better. You should take a look at Joomla and Drupal to see if they have the features you need.
Now back to WP…
The Category Visibility plugin lets you limit the visibility of select post categories (by user), but it can be circumvented. Then there is the Group Restriction plugin that does the same for pages. These are not nearly a perfect solution, and as you charge for the content, they might be out of question.

In reply to: Wp-polls: all active and closed polls on the same static page? Thanks. I can now see all the polls on my “polls” page, but I still cannot vote there. The [page_polls] tag does not seem to offer voting. Anyway, I decided to make this polls page with [poll=#] tags, so that I can add instructions and stuff there. I might place a static archive on a subpage, though. So, problem solved.
I am also missing the layout available in Democracy2, where the labels were to the right of the bars and the count/percentage was on the bar. I’ll see if I can do that with css and poll templates…
This plugin is GREAT!

In reply to: Suggestions to make blog look more interestingCame back to see what other people think.
A few more thoughts…
The dual coloured “Recent Entries” and “Else Where” look beautiful.
You could consider using some javascript plugin, that would float the sidebar (vertically), and make it follow when one scrolls up and down the page. Try “Sidebar slider”: http://aranea.zuavra.net/index.php/27/
I am using it and it works well. You need to add a few hooks in your theme files (at least one in the header and one in each moving part), but it isn’t too complicated for a non-newbie. I have installed it on (both columns of my two column) sidebar, and on the main content too. On the other hand, leaving out these kinds of tricks yields simple and calm pages. I cannot tell if the slider would actually improve the page or not, but it’s worth a try.

In reply to: Suggestions to make blog look more interestingOh, the footer is nice dark blue. Why not the header?

In reply to: Suggestions to make blog look more interestingOk, let’s see…
I like the font, the spacing, the shades of blue, the green tag at the bottom…
I try to be really mean next π
It looks like a fruit salad. Are you aiming at a heavy blue or a light green look? I like the green, white and light blue elements. They give a fresh and light look. But when you combine those with the heavy, dark blue and purple… ouch. In my opinion these two color worlds do not fit together. This breaks the coherence, the structure is lost, and the page becomes difficult to read. Maybe you could keep the green elements of the sidebar, but that second header/menu is a little bit too much. It is actually the headers/menus that I find most troubling. There’s too much stuff up there. Simplify.
You also use two types of lists: numbered and bulleted. Choose one. Simplify.
The green element at the bottom right corner seems to work with this blue theme. But what’s that green line slightly above it? Or the “Older entries” graphics? In my opinion there’s too many sorts of colours there. And the blue striped lines or “older entries” are not found *anywhere* else. Don’t use something just once. Try to apply similar looks throughout the page. Simplify.
The purple menubar changes colour in the middle, and there’s a strange “white well” at the bottom of the page. Simplify.
The content matters. If it’s interesting, then it is. I am not capable of evaluating the contents of this site, though. Not my field of expertise.
If you want to make it more appealing, then add some polls. Polls that are interesting. Forget about information there. Ask questions, that members WANT to answer and read. The democracy2 plugin is one way of achieving polls. Recommended.
If your page contains enough information, and if you manage to organize it’s regular updating, then it could benefit from a forum, too. Creating forums is difficult, though. You need to get a fair amount of active members right in the beginning, or the forum will die even before it was born.

In reply to: Reasons to go free or paid hosting WordPress1. Paid “web hosting” gives you more control, more possibilities, more problems. You can choose what to install. You can choose just those plug-ins that YOU need. Generally this is much more fun than going with a “blogging service”. If your needs are basic, and you couldn’t care less about “tweaking”, but you just want to write, then a ready set up service (like wordpress.com) is good for you. You need to keep two things in mind, though. First, you might want to use your own domain name. Second, you need to check that the plugins and themes you need, are available.
2. Yes. No, WordPress is not complicated. Only when you start playing with plug-ins, some of which have bugs or strange features, problems can emerge. Those problems are then solved here π Also, if you want to do strange things like adding executable code inside your posts, then you may find some challenges (usually solvable). WordPress is good as-is for basic publishing. If the default features are sufficient for your needs, then you will probably never have any issues. The need to install your first plugin becomes a fact about one second after you try to create a table formatted two column list, though. But it is fun.

In reply to: A voting system other than wp-polls?Does wp-polls support several simultaneously active polls?
What kind of privacy features does wp-polls have? Does it allow me do disable ip-logging? Does it store answers in cookies?
And finally, if wp-polls has privacy features and multi-poll-functionality, then has anybody ever tried to import polls from Democracy 2 to wp-polls?
