Thanks for visiting the forum Joost.

I started this thread to have a whinge about Google, but mainly to warn others about what happened to us.

It didn’t occur that my messed up meta titles may have anything to do with WP SEO or WPSEO Video, and I didn’t want to waste your time; if this was not possibly caused by either of your plugins.

I am still not 100% sure about this.

Yesterday, I added Google+ Publisher & Authorship markup to our home page – as recommended above by mAsT3RpEE.
    I then deactivated WPSEO Video.
About the same time you pushed out an update for WP SEO, so I updated.

Within a couple of hours, our meta title and description was displaying correctly in Google serps – after being messed up since 10th June!

You can see that Google has re-indexed our home page, because my mug-shot (authorship) appears next to it. (I have since removed authorship from this page). This is not a cached result either; because I added meta name=”robots” content=”noarchive” to our header.php

I have no idea where this wrong title/description was coming from, but it only appeared in Google serps – not Yahoo or Bing.
If there was something in the database causing problems; the only SEO plugin previously used was ‘Headspace2’.

I would be extremely grateful if you could take a look at our configuration, and perhaps identify what may have caused this problem.
I’ve now sent this same message as a support request; to your WPSEO Video, email address.

Thanks for your further thoughts mAsT3RpEE.

Your understanding of the technical issues involved here is obviously far advanced compared to mine.

But I do now understand what the ‘og’ title is that WP SEO generates, and the potential for it to cause exactly this type of problem.

Looking on the forums; many other people have had many similar experiences to me: messed up titles using WP SEO.

I’m not sure Yoast’s plugin is the best – SEO Ultimate has some excellent features that Yoast’s doesn’t have, without the risk of ruining your ranking with this Open-Graph S*#t!

“Currently the plugin has no support for videos from what I’ve seen in the code.”

I hope you’re referring to the (free) WP SEO plugin – and not the (paid for) Video SEO extension.

I paid $69 for Yoast’s ‘Video SEO’ extension in order to optimize SEO of videos, but that’s when all this trouble all started.

I have been loathe to get rid of WP SEO, simply because another gentleman has written a very useful plugin which integrates the Shopp ecommerce plugin with WP SEO (SEO glue).

I am going to try deleting just the ‘Video SEO’ extension first (even though it cost me $69).
If that doesn’t fix things – I will most definitely be going over to ‘the dark side’ (swapping to SEO Ultimate).

    Thanks for your advice mAsT3RpEE!

I did have the video in an iFrame
I didn’t have any video markup (didn’t know it was needed)
I don’t yet have author rank enabled (on my to-do list)
Everything else you suggest – I always do try to do.

What puzzles me is that after removing the video and replacing it with an image, my meta title & description is still displayed wrongly for that page in a Google search results – nearly 1 month later!

I bought Yoast’s ‘Video SEO for WordPress’ plugin with the intention of using videos more on our website.
Certainly got my fingers burnt with this first effort.

Other websites are now ranking way ahead of mine (in Google) that have no useful information about, or have NOTHING to do with bidets (just use the word in their title).
I still rank #3 or #4 on the first page of search results in Bing and Yahoo – for the keyword ‘bidet’ (with the correct meta title & description I might add).

In 8 years of running my own web-based business I have never seen anything like this this happen before (but I have never added a video to my home page before).

Previously; changes to any web page would get picked up by Google fairly quickly (usually within a week or so).

Seems to me that Google have recently changed the frequency with which they crawl static web pages. Now if you do something wrong – it seems you risk getting left out in the cold indefinitely!
I wish more people would start using Bing & Yahoo, so Google would be forced to become more accountable for this sort of thing.

Thanks for looking at our Shopp problem Jeff.

I spent some time trying to figure out which file you had changed in order to move the plugin load order – until I twigged: THIS IS ALSO A FUNCTION OF PLUGIN ORGANIZER!

For other people like me that haven’t realised this:
Along with that slick drag-and-drop plugins interface; you will also see a new option available under the drop-down tab: ‘Bulk Actions’ – Save plugin load order.

Just drag and drop to your heart’s content, then select ‘Save plugin load order’, then click ‘Apply’.

Bingo! Saves the new load order to your database!

Now; as long as Plugin Organizer loads AFTER Shopp – all is good!

Very useful for getting any other troublesome plugins to play nicely together.

Your plugin is so useful Jeff, I’m going to add another post about exactly why people with lots of plugins should be also using this one.

My only whinge about the update: I don’t like the settings for the plugin being in a different place – but I guess you had a reason.

Thanks for the info Jeff, and congratulations on your excellent work so far with this plugin.
Loved the new interface – certainly less confusing than before.
Unfortunately doesn’t work with my server/website configuration.

I can give you access to our duplicate (test) website if you need to check why.

Yep- like you astrasuite; seems some of the functionality is not present with the new version. I’m also uncomfortable that there is no setting page anymore.
Now running previous version again (with WP V3.5.2).

Just a warning to people wanting to revert to the previous version:
be sure to completely delete V3.0 plugin-organizer from your plugins folder BEFORE restoring a previous version backup of your database – otherwise your site will break.

Also this word of warning from Sarah: http://wpmu.org/think-twice-before-you-upgrade-that-wordpress-plugin/

I am aware, but nevertheless repeatedly ignore these facts.
We do tend to get lulled into a sense of false security; because of the ease of updating plugins from within WP-admin, and because 9 times out of 10 – there are usually no problems anyway.

Mental note: WAIT – at least one week, before updating anything.
Always check in the forums FIRST (not later) before updating any plugin.

    Thanks astrasuite,

I was going to just wait for an update – but:
One of the main reasons for using this plugin was to minimize home page loading time.
I have about 40 other plugins used on my site, and while there are other ways to stop plugins loading on specific pages, this plugin was an easy and efficient way of doing this.

May just restore the database – so I can maintain optimized page loading speed – while waiting for the update.

I also just discovered Yoast’s Google analytics plugin does not include any allowance to add the remarketing code.

Pity; Yoast’s plugin does add some extra functionality, and because the code is inserted dynamically it always ensures you are using the latest code.
Otherwise you do need to check occasionally in your analytics account that your code is still current, and if not; manually update by placing the new code in your header.php.

Those benefits are minor compared to the ecommerce benefits of using remarketing (your ad follows the customer around the web).

Consequently; no longer using Google Analytics for WordPress.

    Phew!

    Thanks for the explanation Mike.

But my sessions are not being stored as transients.

Are my sessions not being deleted because I am using W3 Total Cache with APC opcode cache (there were over 1000 in my wp_options table)?

    @ kangenguru,

Yep – sure can, not with this plugin though.
Look in your theme file for a php file:
    either – coments.php or comments_backup.php
    (or something like this)
Then look for the date bits; in mine it is this bit of code:

    <p>by <?php comment_author_link()?></p>
    <p>On <?php comment_date(‘F j, Y’) ?> at <?php comment_time()?></p>

Just delete that second line, and the date of your comments will no longer appear!

The bits of code you will need to remove should be in your themes index.php file.
This tweaked line in mine now gives only: “Written by: Author”

    <p id=”author”>Written<?php the_time(‘F j, Y’); ?><?php the_time() ?> by: <?php the_author() ?></p>

Of course you could also remove the date bits – or even this whole line – but then you wouldn’t even need this plugin would you?

I prefer to keep the date bits intact in case I still want to write a time-critical post someday.
In that case I will use another useful plugin: “Plugin Organizer” to disable the Date Remover plugin on that particular post.

    Yep, me too,

Ive been sticking with version 2.0.4 because every update after that has just not worked for me.

Updated this plugin yesterday and was pleased to see it finally working OK.

That is – until I tried to do some things in WP-Admin today.

Really weird behavior; some of my other plugins just didn’t work at all, some redirected me to the login screen and a lot of the core functionality of wordpress would not work also.

    Basically, I couldn’t edit anything!

The worst of it was, I thought we had been hacked again because I had accidentally left permissions on wp-content set to 0777 for several days prior to this happening.
Spent most of the day deleting files and re-creating databases before I finally twigged to the reason.

Running wp v3.4.2, php v5.3.18, MySQL v5.5.27 on an xen VPS with about 40 other plugins – which all play happily together – except this one.

Reverted back to v 2.0.4, and all is well again.
Keep up the good work Mike!

    Sure Mike,

I did re-download the latest dev version and re-tried (same).

I have reactivated your access credentials (sent to your email: Sunday, 22 July 2012 11:05 AM).

This is our LIVE site, so be sure to activate ‘JF3 Maintenance Redirect’ plugin before installing/trying latest WordPress HTTPS Development version.
I have the previous version currently installed (which works OK, but disables some of the visual editor features in WP admin)

If I have ‘Force SSL Exclusively’ checked; this actually makes my SSL pages not able to load HTTPS.

Yes, the pages with ‘Secure Post’ checkbox – checked

Yep, previous dev. version disabled ‘add link’ in the visual editor.
    Latest development update fixed that.

One thing different with this version:
If I have ‘Force SSL Exclusively’ (Any page that is not secured via Force SSL or URL Filters will be redirected to HTTP) checked, this actually makes my SSL pages not able to load HTTPS.

If I have this unchecked; SSL pages load HTTPS like they should, but then stay on HTTPS when you go back to the other pages.

Thanks for continuing to improve the plugin Mike!
