  • Hi Michal, GDE is a WordPress plugin and won’t work outside of WordPress. If your document is hosted on your own non-WP site you can potentially use the viewer standalone as this plugin does.

    Good luck.

    Nancy,

Yes, others have reported this problem as well. Google is having problems connecting to documents on certain sites and not on others. I’ve never once had a satisfactory response (or really, any response at all) to support queries on their forums, though once again I’ve tried.

Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon. Unfortunately the nature of the problem seems to be on Google’s end and there isn’t much I can suggest, other than temporarily moving critical documents to unaffected servers or services (like Dropbox). Not a good solution, I know.

    Sorry for the inconvenience πŸ™

I don’t need access to your private site. You could just send the URL to the document (or another document that doesn’t work as a sample, if it’s sensitive).

My suspicion is that the document is private/offline/internal only also, which won’t work, per the FAQ. The site can be local but the document has to be internet-accessible, even if the location isn’t published anywhere. This is what allows Google Viewer to fetch it and for conversion and return to the viewer.

I’d have to see the link to give you a definitive answer on that. If you’d like you can use the Support tab in GDE Settings to send me an example privately. (If it’s not private you can just post it here.)

Uploading to the media library is the ideal solution, but only if your site is public. Since you called it an “intranet” I’m guessing it’s not (?).

The file has to be at a public location – meaning, if you sent someone on the internet the URL (not that you have to) they should be able to click on it, and with no password or anything just be able to download it. The page where the embedder is placed can be private, however.

    Hello,

That code is certainly not generated by GDE.

Please be sure that the documents you’re embedding are uploaded somewhere publicly accessible via the internet, even if your site itself is private and/or local. If Google can’t fetch the document for conversion, it won’t work. Per the FAQ.

    Hi Jade,

Please read the FAQ, especially the question “Does it work with files saved in Google Docs/Drive?”

Sorry for the confusion the plugin name brings – if I had enough foresight to choose something else at the beginning, that would have been helpful. GDE uses Google Viewer in a standalone fashion for personal documents and isn’t connected to Google Drive.

    Hi Tammy,

You can contact me directly using the support tab in GDE Settings, or at the email address in the GPL statement near the top of the file gviewer.php.

If it’s not working in only one browser, though, it’s almost certainly a local browser issue. GDE doesn’t deliver different code based on browser.

There are several other threads here mentioning that issue. It helps some to log out of their Google account to bypass this. In either case it doesn’t affect your visitors (I can view the document fine).

    Hi ABC,

I think you’ll find that if you convert the document to the older office format (.XLS vs .XLSX) this issue will be resolved. While Office XML (2007+) formats are supported in Google Viewer, the support is still problematic on occasion.

I may need to log in (or at least see screenshots) to give you a definite answer, but be sure you try the standard fixes first – clear your browser cache and any cookies related to your site or Google.

Does it work in any browser? Try one you haven’t used in a while, or on another computer. This will help rule out a local issue.

At the moment I’ve tested this again, your shortcode has been commented out (or the plugin disabled). But nonetheless, I can’t explain how the behavior you’re seeing (which I wasn’t able to reproduce when I tried earlier) is even possible. The plugin makes no attempt at all to discover the browser let alone change its delivery based on it. The same code is delivered everywhere regardless of browser. It makes sense then, on the understanding that you’re really seeing this issue even though I could not, that the differences have to be local… either cache or cookies, most likely.

FWIW I didn’t test Safari but had the same identical viewer with the same identical options show up in IE, Firefox, and Chrome, which is exactly the behavior I would expect.

Not trying to argue with you but I really would need to be able to see this in action to attempt a guess at why it’s happening for you. If you can think of any other way to try to demonstrate the issue I’m happy to take another look.

    timbo,

The error I get on your page isn’t related to bandwidth but to being unable to access the document. This is a known problem right now between some servers and Google and doesn’t have to do with the plugin. If you have another web location to store the files (another hosting account, or a dropbox account, etc.) that may bypass the issue.

This solution is far from ideal, but also unfortunately beyond my ability to influence from the plugin.

    Hello,

The viewer supports complex characters pretty well, but I wonder if it is getting confused in this case since there is more than one character encoding in the document. That is a guess.

It appears the same problem occurs when you view the document in Google Viewer apart from GDE:

    https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://www.mifarooqui.com/wp-content/uploads/pdf/526214_thirteenthAmendment.pdf

That being the case it’s something you may wish to point out on Google support forums as GDE does not do the document conversion, Google does.

Sorry I can’t be more directly helpful.

    Don,

Sorry for your frustration, and annoyance. I didn’t see any earlier threads by you or I would have done my best to respond to them. I agree that’s odd that you can’t see them now but moderator conspiracy might be a bit of a jump.

The page you link to doesn’t use GDE so there’s not much left for me to help you with. If you decide you do want to try to use the plugin, I’m happy to assist you. Let me know exactly what problem you’re having.

    Thanks,

    Kevin
