  • The code works the same across all major browsers, so you may wish to refer to the documentation if you’re finding it works differently from one to the other. The usual culprits are caching problems and Google account logins (cookies).

Nobody in this thread has described a specific issue, though (what works, what doesn’t? where?), so if you find the standard viewer a suitable replacement, that will actually load faster on your sites anyway.

    Hi James,

As a viewer only, there are no editing facilities. It essentially converts your document into a series of flat image files, which every browser supports without need of plugins, but comes with all the limitations of that approach.

    Annie,

Download text can be set to whatever you wish in GDE Settings. The setting applies to every link that uses the selected profile, though, so if you use it for more than one document certain options won’t make sense. It is the “link text” setting when you go to Settings > GDE Settings in the WP dashboard.

At present there isn’t a way in GDE to override this on a per document basis, short of turning the download link setting off and creating your own.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi James,

I’m able to embed the linked document normally using the default profile (I didn’t try secure documents).

If you will submit a request using the support tab in GDE Settings I’ll have a snapshot of your configuration and may be able to assist more specifically. But there are no inherent problems with the document itself and GDE.

    Thanks

    Kevin

    James,

Sorry for the slow response. You’ve resurrected a very old and not relevant thread…

You’re getting a 404 on a secure document. I’ve seen this a few times for reasons unknown, but I’m looking for some solutions. Unfortunately I can’t reproduce the problem on my server which makes it more difficult.

I’m assuming it works correctly if you use the standard default profile (not secure documents)? If you’re willing to send me the literal URL of the document you’re trying to privately embed (via the support tab in GDE Settings), I can see if I can reproduce the problem

Loading a document from one domain or another will be about the same speed, especially if they are on the same network/server.

You might try starting with a minimal (or no) htaccess file to see if there’s something else in there that’s defeating the GDE embedding on the subdomain.

    Hello,

After more investigation into this issue with subdomains, it turns out my initial assumption was not correct – I am not able to reproduce this exact issue. I was seeing a different problem on my own subdomains.

I can in fact embed both of your source documents on my dev site without issue:

    http://dev.davismetro.com/single/subdomain-test/

This doesn’t explain the behavior I’m seeing on your site, so I don’t mean to say that there is nothing to fix, only that since I can’t see the issue when I try to recreate it on my site using your documents it seems related to your particular server config.

One difference I see from my server to yours is that yours is sending a Content-Disposition: attachment response header, meaning a direct link to the PDF is prompting me to download it rather than attempting to view it in the browser (such as with the built in PDF viewers in Firefox and Chrome). I don’t think that’s the specific issue, since both your main domain and subdomain do the same thing, but there are definitely configuration differences that are altering PDF file behavior in general when called from my server vs. yours.

I’m willing to test this further but I might need admin access to your WordPress to do some debugging by editing the view.php file in your configuration. I’m not sure if you want to pursue that or not, but wanted to present the option.

    Mr Wood,

This is addressed in the FAQ, “Does it work with files saved in Google Docs/Drive?”

In short, the answer is “no,” because the files must be in their native formats and accessible at a standard URL that includes their file type, not a shortened or otherwise cloud-bogus link to the file. However you might get the same net benefit by putting the files in Dropbox or something similar (that maintains the original file extension in the URL) and controlling who can write to that.

I’m still working on this problem, I’m sorry for the delay.

It’s not possible to make any changes to the viewer pane itself without using the Enhanced Viewer (only to its dimensions, and the download link properties). It is by definition the original code as Google provides.

I have to admit I’m initially stumped on this one. I’ve reproduced the behavior on one of my own subdomains, so it’s presumably nothing you’re doing wrong. The behavior is very strange. I can’t think of a reason why a page that loads plainly will give a 404 based on the contents of its query string.

I’m going to have to dig into this one a bit more and get back to you. Just wanted to confirm I’ve received your messages and I’m looking into it. Thanks for your patience.

    Hello,

Please see this thread about the issue. Awaiting a fix from Google on this.

    acg,

Please consider starting new threads when your topic isn’t related to others, that helps people with similar issues find the solutions they are looking for as well.

There are in fact many threads in this forum asking this exact question. The file you are hosting must not be local, but public, per the FAQ. Your site itself can be local during development and the plugin will work, but the document itself must be public. Otherwise Google can’t fetch it for conversion.

If that is the case, and you’re still receiving this message, please reply with a link to the document you’re trying to embed so I can try it out.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

    Hi Arie,

Thanks for the added information. I can see the error message now. I can view the document when I download but the viewer can’t see it. It doesn’t appear there is anything you’re doing wrong as far as the plugin is concerned. This looks like a Google issue, or a network issue between your server and Google.

You could try hosting the document on a server other than “idcis.nl” just to see if it’s able to connect to the document via another host. Other than that I can only say I agree it is very strange. Which I know is not very helpful; sorry about that. Some people have had good luck using links from Dropbox if you don’t have another option.

If I come to any other ideas I’ll let you know. Thanks for your patience.

Sounds like you either had a temporary glitch or you’ve got some issues with your browser cache or another plugin. Hopefully the problem won’t repeat, but what you’re seeing isn’t caused by GDE directly (settings page disappearing, etc. isn’t a function offered! haha).

    Hi arfo,

I’m the whole support team. Nice to meet you. πŸ™‚

I have the added disadvantage of not speaking Dutch (a guess from the domain extension), but I can observe a few things on the links you’ve given.

You’re using the private documents feature, it appears, and I can’t access the document either when I click in the viewer on “here”. Maybe you are loading from cache or maybe the document really isn’t reachable from the USA, where Google is.

The “example” link you provided, http://www.selab.isti.cnr.it/ws-mate/example.pdf works correctly for me, without errors.

I would suggest you try using the viewer in a normal mode – do not mask the URL or disallow downloads, etc. – and see if the problem resolves. There may be an issue with private document support but we should determine if you can get it working correctly with your documents using standard means first.

    Thanks,

    Kevin
