The hosting administrator, SiteGround, confirmed that the server is configured to support image/svg+xml mime types. In addition, as I mentioned earlier, the file has a viewbox parameter. Perhaps something else is happening.

In reply to: [Admin Menu Editor] Restore to defaultsYou were right! I believe the problem was caused by my deleting the plugin files (after moving them to the MU-plugins directory) and not having a WP delete function remove the database table.
All working well now.
(I would suggest removing the mu-plugins instruction in that AME worked fine with a standard network activtion.)
