If the file is “virtual” it is only generated when someone visits, it is not physically on your site.

Yes, I believe it is ‘virtual’, which is why I can’t find it. But how then would I be able to optimize the robot.txt file? I wanted to eliminate problems like the duplicate title tags, which show up in my Google dashboard. I was going to install the All in One SEO Pack, but my research led me to a thread here, which indicated it won’t work with the way my host has their server configured.

Have you double checked your Dashboard >> Privacy >> “My blog is visible to anyone” ??

Yes, it is visible. I don’t necessarily want the robot.txt file to go away, I want to be able to optimize it for like the Google bot, and also if possible use it to block out more of the bad bots.

Did you try removing your tag cloud widget from the sidebar area, move it into the inactive widget area, saving the change and then reactivating the widget? Maybe after you did the upgrade it got goofed up in the transition if the widget was in the sidebar during the upgrade. You might also want to try reverting back to the default theme while the widget is inactive, and then go back to your preferred theme. Perhaps that might fix it, unless you changed some codes that need to be fixed?

If you’re referring to your WP admin account, that’s generally changed from your WP dashboard in the profile area, but are you saying that you could no longer get to your admin dashboard? If not, is there any chance someone hacked into your account and changed the password? If there is a chance that may have occurred did you look for any roque users in your database? Not sure why you wouldn’t be able to get back to your admin dashboard.

Did you try logging out, clearing your browser cache, and then log back in?

This isn’t rated for 2.9.1, but perhaps if you contacted the developer they could tell you if it would work with 2.9.1

If you change your password for your database, you need to also change the password to the same in your WP config.php file. Do those passwords match? If not, you will be locked out of your admin dashboard for WP.

I did get into my FTP and got files loaded and all, but I don’t see anything from my blog

    Hi brodymom7,
Do you not see any of the WordPress folders in your ftp? You need to locate the ‘Content’ folder under WordPress, and then ‘Themes’ like you see here:
    wp-content/themes/mt-dark/functions.php on line 115.
Once you locate your theme, mt-dark, then you have one of two choices to fix the functions.php file. The first choice would be to delete that one file from only that theme folder, functions.php and drop in the same file from a backup copy of your hard drive uploaded to that same folder.

The second choice you have to choose from is to locate the exact codes in that file that you pasted in for the site meter, and delete only those codes. If it didn’t corrupt the file too bad, then you should be able to just delete them from that one file, save the change and have your site restored.

When you feel adventurous again with adding codes, be careful with which file you choose to add them to. For a site-meter code it would be better to select like a footer.php file, a sidebar widget, footer widget etc. Hope you get your blog back up and working soon! 🙂

It would help if you could provide a link.

From the admin panel go into the permalink settings. Resave the permalink settings you had prior to the problem. Then test the links again. If that doesn’t fix the challenge, and if you’re using a theme other than the default, revert back to the default theme and see if that affects your problem.

    brodymom7,

    faithmama,
Did you add some sort of an image plugin to your 4 blogs, that may be creating the challenge? Did you make a change to your web browser settings like for java script?

WordPress is waaay too complex for me.

    Hey brodymom7,
Now hang in there… You can make this work if you put your head to it. Over time it WILL get easier! It’s too soon to bail out! Roll up your sleeves and dig in. 😮

Ive never wanted to cry and pull my hair out the way I do now!

We’ve all been there – except for the bald guys – lol.

Yeah, it is much more complicated than Blogger, but you will have total control of your site, unlike with Blogger, and you will be very proud of yourself for getting past the learning curve. I have blogs on Blogger too, (on my own domains), so I know what you’re experiencing in regards to the learning curve with WordPress vs Blogger.

Hope to hear back with how you’re doing!

Feeling dumb over this issue, as I’ve been trying to access my robot.txt file for some time so I can add codes to it, but can’t seem to find it. I know it’s located in my root directory because I can view it from my browser when I put in the url, but why can’t I find the file from my ftp to add anything to it? I’ve read other threads from others who have had the same issue, but none of the other threads reveal where to find the file. Seems crazy that I can view all other files in my root, but why not the robot.txt?

I see in my sitemap generator page from my admin dashboard it does state this:

The virtual robots.txt generated by WordPress is used. A real robots.txt file must NOT exist in the blog directory!

As mentioned above, my browser window shows it’s located in my root like this: http://www.myurl.com/robot.txt and it shows the following codes:
    User-agent: * Disallow:

I’m using the XML Sitemap Generator, but the only files I see in the root for that is the sitemap.xml and the sitemap.xml.gz zipped folder. My url for the sitemap is this:
    http://www.myurl.com/sitemap.xml

Google finds both my robot.txt and my sitemap, but again I want to add some codes to the robot.txt to improve my site. My actual url I’m referring to is linkandblog (dot com). Thank you.
