  • Hi Dan,
This may not be of much help to you. My host provides a one-click install of WordPress, which makes it super easy. Have you first double-checked in your host’s panel to see if maybe you have the one-click install? If you’re on Dreamhost, they are one that provides the one-click install.

Otherwise, I’m not going to be able to be of that much help to you, but one thing I noticed is that you mentioned renaming the folder. You maybe should not be renaming the folder, and you also want to make sure that when you load the WordPress program into your ftp that you leave it zipped up until you place it into your ftp program. Your ftp program should be able to assign the appropriate names for the folders etc. As I mentioned that might not be of much help, but I’m sure someone else will probably have the answer for you if it doesn’t help.

Since my initial post I sent an email to notify Technorati in case the problem may be on their end.

Has anyone here had this challenge with their blog? I still need a resolve. Thank you.

    Hi,

Problem is though from what Sachi21 has explained, WordPress was already installed in their root directory. If the person already has posts and pages created, uninstalling WordPress from the root directory and re-installing it in a subfolder – wouldn’t that cause all the existing posts and pages to become dead pages online since they would then be assigned new permalinks?

    Hi Sachi21,

I relate to what you are talking about. Don’t feel dumb, I did the same thing – I installed WordPress in my root directory as well and in that I didn’t have the tech experience, WordPress experience, or hindsight to do otherwise, I found myself in the same boat as yourself with wanting a unique styled homepage rather than my WordPress blog as the homepage. Although I haven’t tried it, here is another possible option to resolve this issue:

    http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/home-page-control

I had an experienced WordPress user refer me in that direction, but as I mentioned above I haven’t taken the time to give it a try. If you decide to use it then let me know. I have another project to finish up before tackling that one. I hope that may be of help to your dilemma!

    Hi,

I’ve been researching these options recently too, and I thought about converting My WordPress blog over to Joomla, but as some others have said here I don’t like the looks of a published blog in Joomla, plus that’s not to mention the nightmares one is faced with converting posts and pages over and losing the url file paths unless one does some hefty tweaking. Unless there are some other options from what I saw over on Joomlas site, the blog posts were side by side and too small.

So if I stick with WordPress but want the management components of Joomla and some of the other extensions, does JD WordPress work for that as well?

Also, if a person uses WordPress for their blogging platform and if you have other site pages in Joomla how hard is it to be able to get a template to skin them the same? Or, am I misunderstanding how the two would integrate together? Is it that you would just be utilizing admin management capacities of Joomla, but to your site visitors it would remain in appearance as a WordPress blog only? I’m confused at how the two integrate together if someone could clarify for me.

I’m building a blogging community so the WordPress blog is good, but I’m already seeing the need for extensions and things I can’t get for WordPress, or the ones I can get all end up essentially as being separate systems that are not managed through one admin panel and I want to avoid that if possible. Really need the integration as much as possible for personal messaging, forum, member management, chat etc. rather than scattered as different components.

Anyone able to help on this? Thanks.

    Hi,

I was definetly having problems with the wysiwyg, but I don’t ever use anything other than typing directly into the wysiwyg editor or Notepad! I don’t use Word or other processors for website data so I don’t know why the bad code could have occurred, but thank you for informing me as to what the heck is going on with it! I’ll go in and delete the post and start it over.

    Thanks for your help!

If anyone could possibly help with this. I’ve worked on it all day and I think I’ve concluded my sidebar is the problem. The validator shows the sidebar has been defined twice. It is a 3 column template and so I don’t know enough about how the sidebar is to be defined to get it fixed. I never changed the sidebar lines where it is defined, so I don’t know why the error is there unless it was there in the original template. I’ve worked for a month on this project so far all surrounding this template so I really don’t want to have to change templates.

I eliminated the text wrap code from the template Stylesheet, and it made no difference, which brings me back to figuring it must be the sidebar code. The permalink for the specific page in question is shown above in my last post.

Also, in regards to the two images I have on that page one correctly opens the url the thumbnail photo shows, but no matter what I’ve tried I can’t get the url to stick to the photo using the same steps as the first thumbnail. 🙁 Frustrating day! Thank you for any help possible!

    Hi Yosemite,

Oh, silly me – yes it’s CSS, but my brains are fried from trying to correct this so I got php mixed up with css! LOL

I copied and pasted the code above exactly as you have it into my Stylesheet, but it didn’t correct my sidebar challenge. BTW, I disable the WordPress cache while making changes so I know the change indeed took affect. I’m on WordPress 2.03 The images I had loaded that presented the problem were only thumbnails, but linked with the option to enlarge them when clicked.

I’m thinking maybe the text wrap code isn’t necessarily the problem and maybe I do have a problem with my sidebar code, but if that’s the case, I don’t know how to correctly close it if I have an open tag. And, since I didn’t make any changes to my sidebar I don’t know how it could have gotten goofed up, but I know all it takes is to slip up and accidently delete something. Maybe if you can look at my page and view the code it might help. The specific permalink where it is goofed up is:
    http://www.linkandblog.com/how-link-blog-began/

I did run it through the validator and it does show a sidebar code has been duplicated, but I didn’t try to change that or venture into that territory. So, I guess maybe that’s the source of my challenge?

As I mentioned above, the other pages of my url don’t have a problem with the sidebar, only the one listed above where I had several images but then I deleted them to try to correct the problem. However, before I tried to add the code in for the text wrap for photos I have noticed that sometimes the text in my right sidebar appears smaller than the right, with Mozilla. And, when I view in IE all my pages are shifted to the left, but only slightly in Mozilla.

I appreciate your help! I’ve been pulling my hair out on this one! LOL!

    Hi,
I see what you’re saying. I looked at your other page that does still have the hashing in the background to compare. Here’s one possibility that you might want to consider. In regards to the page without hashing within your posting I noticed that you used the / backslash symbol several times. You may want to take those out of your post and replace it with something else. It may be a long shot and not provide a solution, but I had a similiar thing happen, which was only viewable with Mozilla, but not IE. I had used a character within a page I wrote and for whatever reason it affected the text within my sidebar. Once I took out the character from my post page the problem went away.

Again, it might be a long shot, but since it would be an easy fix it’s worth a try. Hope that might be of help.

Thanks for that added info Quintessential! I may look into that sometime in the near future, but I have too many other things to get installed for now.

    Hi,
I’m also looking for the same thing, with the capabilities of having sub-categories. I saw this suggestion on another thread. It is a nice layout. Is this what you’re wanting to do? The only thing though is they charge for this program. I also don’t know if it is compatible with WordPress since I didn’t look into it any further once I saw that it isn’t a free plug-in.

    http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/demo/

Is there a free WordPress plug-in to accomplish something similiar to the php link directory above, with sub-category capabilities? I really need to resolve my dilema for this by this weekend if possible. Thanks.

    Glad to have helped!

    Hi,

I’m also needing to accomplish a directory and I like the layout shown here: http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/demo/ since it has sub-categories. I’m wondering if any of you have created a directory in a layout similar to the one above with the program ladydelaluna referred to? Can you accomplish the same sort of results with that plug-in like the php link directory demo above? Thanks.

Sounds like we’re all seeking the same capability! I was going to try to utilize a Page to create a directory of my members, and upload a document into the WordPress Page, but I wasn’t sure what type of doc’s can be placed into a WordPress Page or if that’s a practical idea or not. May not accomplish what we want anyhow.
