Hi again @5lions,
Just wanted to check if you had a bit of time to look into this or if there’s anything else you’d like me to help with.
Hi @joncon62,
Thanks again for sending the files. We’ve reviewed them on our side and have been able to reproduce the issue. Our dev team is now looking into it to identify the exact cause and prepare a fix.
Sorry for the inconvenience, and we’ll update you as soon as we have more details.
Hello again @5lions
Thanks for sharing the screenshot. I think there might be a bit of a misunderstanding about what that data represents. The entries you’re seeing are simply showing the browser type, the IP, and the device details detected from the user agent whenever the short link is accessed. If the short link is being used in any medium that scans or previews links, such as certain messaging apps or security layers, that system will technically request the link to fetch metadata. Those requests show up as clicks because they are real hits coming from the user agent doing the preview.
If you prefer to exclude automated requests like these, you can enable the bot filter we provide. It blocks known crawlers from being counted in the click logs. Here’s the guide with the steps: https://betterlinks.io/docs/how-to-prevent-bot-traffic/
Let me know how it goesHi there @5lions ,
Thanks for sharing your concern. To understand this properly, could you send a clear screenshot of your findings? Something that shows the exact entries in the click log, including whatever source or user agent information you’re seeing. The more specific the details, the easier it will be for us to review.
Also, please share the short link you created along with the target URL. That will let us check the full flow on our side and see what’s actually happening.
Once we have those details, we can take a proper look.
Hi @joncon62,
Thanks for checking in again. Whenever it’s convenient for you, please upload the export file to Google Drive or any other file sharing service and send us the URL here. That will let us download it directly and run a proper test on our side.
We’ll take a closer look as soon as we have it.
Hi Billy,
I’ve been going through this on my side just to be sure, and I can’t seem to reproduce the problem. Everything updates right away for me, so something local might be holding the old data.
Perhaps try turning off your caching first. Both page cache and any object caching if you have it. Then click on any specific BetterLinks link to generate a fresh hit. After that, head into the settings and use the Refresh Stats option again.
When you return to the Manage Links page, give it a full reload and see if the new counts appear. Sometimes that extra reload helps clear whatever is stuck.
If it still refuses to update, a quick screen recording of the steps would really help. That way I can watch exactly what’s happening and spot if anything looks out of place.
Let me know how it goes.
Hi there @joncon62 ,
Really sorry for the inconvenience you’re facing.
From what you described, it sounds like the issue might be related to media or links that are still pointing to the original site, but we haven’t been able to reproduce the same problem on our end. To look into this properly, could you please share the exact doc file you’re trying to import? Once we have that, we can test it locally and see what’s actually causing these block errors. The default WordPress importer handles media a bit differently, so checking your file will help us figure out whether something is breaking during the export or during the import process.
Whenever you can, just send over the file and we’ll take a deeper look.
Hi @flatword ,
Thanks for pointing this out. I followed the same steps on my end and I was able to reproduce the issue, so it’s confirmed. The tag disappears after saving even though it shows correctly while editing.
We’re planning to include the fix in the next release. If you notice anything else, feel free to let me know.
Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.
Hi there @razione ,
I had a look at the screenshot and I think there might be a bit of confusion. Essential Addons doesn’t include any AI related feature, so the API key field you’re seeing isn’t coming from our plugin. Could you double check which product or extension is adding that option on your site? And just a small note for your safety. It’s better not to share your actual API key in public threads. You’ll want to regenerate it from your OpenAI account as well.
When you share the issue again, it would really help if you could include the browser console log so we can see if there are any visible errors happening in the background.
Let me know once you have that and I’ll take another look.
Hi @ep2012
No worries at all, I’m glad you figured it out!
About the redirect idea, that’s a really interesting thought, though in this case it could get a bit tricky. If we were to automatically create redirects whenever a short link changes, it might end up creating redirects for redirects, which can lead to looping or slower link resolution.
That’s mainly why we keep the short link stable once it’s created. It avoids those unnecessary redirect chains and keeps everything performing smoothly.
Still, I really appreciate the suggestion, it’s a smart idea, and we’ll definitely keep it in mind while improving link management in future updates.
Best,
PialHi @ep2012 ,
Just wanted to check in and see if you had a chance to test it yet. I explained earlier how the title and short link work separately after the link is created, but I’d love to know if that matches what you’re seeing on your end.
If you’ve already tried it and everything looks fine, that’s great. If not, no worries — take your time, and let me know once you’ve checked so we can confirm everything’s working properly.
Best,
PialHi there @unrealnfs ,
Really appreciate you confirming the details. The SPYC and Device Detector files appear in Code Profiler since they’re part of BetterLinks’ backend libraries, but they don’t actually run or affect the frontend. They’re only triggered dynamically during redirection or analytics tracking.
Thanks again for running such a careful test and sharing your findings, it really helps.
Glad to hear you’re switching to BetterLinks! You can easily migrate your existing links by following this guide:

Or check out this quick walkthrough: https://d.pr/v/amgebNLet me know if you ever need any other help, always happy to assist.
Best regards,
PialHi there @unrealnfs ,
Thanks for taking the time to share this detailed test, we really appreciate your effort and enthusiasm for BetterLinks.
However, none of the screenshots you shared seem to be accessible, so we couldn’t review the profiler output directly.
From our side, in previous similar checks, Code Profiler has been known to flag the SPYC library as resource intensive. But to clarify, BetterLinks doesn’t actually utilize SPYC on the frontend. It’s only used within the Device Detector module, and even that runs after a short link is clicked, specifically when tracking is disabled. In other words, it’s only triggered dynamically during redirection and doesn’t affect your site’s frontend load or general page performance.
Based on our findings so far, there should be no measurable Performance impact. That said, if you’ve observed any actual slowdowns directly attributable to BetterLinks (for instance, delayed page loads or server response time increases), we’d love to investigate those cases closely.
Could you please share:
- A working link or download of your profiler report
- The exact test environment (site type, number of redirects, and whether analytics were enabled)
This will help us replicate your setup and make sure we identify anything unusual.
Thank you again for your patience and for choosing BetterLinks, we’ll be happy to dig deeper once we have those extra details.
Best regards,
PialHey there @eastandsthlm ,
Really sorry you’re having trouble with the wildcard redirection.
Since this plugin now follows a limited update schedule, newer releases mainly focus on essential fixes and compatibility updates rather than new feature development.
We’ve already released a newer and more advanced redirect management plugin called BetterLinks — it’s essentially an upgraded version of this plugin. It includes everything Simple 301 Redirects offered, plus much more flexibility, stability, and control.
With BetterLinks, you can:
- Track clicks and view detailed analytics
- Manage and organize all your links in one place
- Migrate all your existing redirects from Simple 301 Redirects with a single click
You can learn more and get started here:
👉 https://betterlinks.io/docs/simple-301-redirects-links-to-betterlinks/And since you’re using wildcard redirects, here’s a quick guide to setting them up properly in BetterLinks:
👉 https://betterlinks.io/docs/how-to-use-the-wildcards-feature/I’d recommend giving BetterLinks a try — it’s built to handle advanced redirect patterns like yours smoothly and stays fully compatible with the latest WordPress updates.
Let me know how it goes after migration. I’ll be happy to help if you need any assistance with the setup.
Hi @ep2012 ,
That’s actually expected behavior. When you first create a link in BetterLinks, the short link (slug) is automatically generated based on the title you enter at that time.
However, once the link is created, the title and the short link work independently. So, if you later edit just the title, BetterLinks updates the title only. It doesn’t automatically change the short link — and that’s intentional.
The reason is simple: once a short link is live, it might already be shared across your website, social posts, or marketing campaigns. If BetterLinks changed the short link automatically every time you updated the title, all your previously shared URLs would break.
That’s why we designed it so the short link stays stable after creation. If you actually want to update the short URL too, you can always edit it manually from the same link editor.
Hope that clears it up. Let me know if you have any concerns.
Best,
Pial
