Hey all – CEO of Imagely here. I wanted to post an additional note on this. The root cause for this is a bug in two specific versions of PHP. The powers that be have already patched this on the PHP side, though have not yet released it.
The nature of the bug means that it would be an epic task for us to ‘fix’ it in NextGEN Gallery. The bug relates to PHP logic that we use throughout the plugin.
All that means that we do not intend to fix it on our side, but rather wait for PHP to release its own patch.
In the meantime, we are going to push a release that deactivates most NextGEN Gallery functionality on any servers that are running the two problem versions of PHP. This fix is being tested now, and will be released in the next couple of hours.

As a side note, I should emphasize that the PHP bugs have ramifications well beyond NextGEN Gallery. Mixed with a variety of other products or environments, the PHP bugs can cause server crashes. We know from internal conversations that Cloudways, for example, tried updating to 7.1.12 and then rolled back due to related issues. So if your servers are running the problem versions, they *should* be rolled back, or upgraded once the patches are released – in general and not just because of NextGEN Gallery.
If you have further questions, let us know.

You’re welcome to reach out to support, and we may be able to suggest a few things to check.
Hey @fhade – Just wanted to follow up on this. I think we’d actually agree that NextGEN Gallery would be even better if it supported video. But do you really think that drops the plugin from 5 to 2 stars? If not, any chance we could encourage to your revise your star rating?
To give some context: NextGEN Gallery still has more cumulative features than any other gallery plugin you can find. As Scott noted, it does also support yoast sitemaps (if you’re having issues getting it working, feel free to open a post on the forums). I’d add that many/most gallery other plugins also don’t support video – since, by definition, most gallery plugins are concerned first and foremost with images.
In any case, if you think it’s a great plugin, but just happens to be missing an extra, useful feature, that’s probably more like 4 stars than 2 stars 🙂
In any case, thanks for the feedback.
Erick (CEO, Imagely/NextGEN Gallery)
@markwebstar – yup, the issue you had with the ???? should now be fixed.
For those curious, the issue with the question marks would only have occurred on hosting platforms that doesn’t have PHP compiled with libxml. Libxml is used by most hosting companies by default, which is why we never saw it on our side.
Hey all – just an update. We’ve now released 2.2.10 in the last few minutes which resolves the issue for those above seeing question marks (?????) on the screen. No one in this thread reported it, but it was in some other threads, and I wanted to add a note about it here in case any others wander into the thread.
This is in addition to the 2.2.9 release earlier today.

Hey all – just wanted to let you know that the issue with the questions marks showing is also now fixed. We pushed the fix in version 2.2.10 a few minutes ago. If you still have issues, please let us know.
Special thanks to @logart who sent in his site details. Your site is the only one we’ve been able to get access to with the issue. Without it we would not have resolved the issue today. Thanks!
@vwilmot Great to hear on the initial issues. Can you post a link by chance so we can see the centering issue?
Thanks for the follow up @djgrant181. Great to hear.
@markwebstar – thanks for following up. Sounds like the line 273 fix didn’t work for you. Just to confirm, can you tell us any more about your symptoms? Did you just have a white screen?
Thanks @andreasl. Good to hear.
Great. Thanks for following up.
@vwilmot – We had some related issues posted today where theme styling was affected. We just pushed a fix (version 2.2.9). When you get a chance, can you update to 2.2.9 and confirm if this issue is resolved?
Thanks @logart – We still can’t duplicate that ???? issue. If you’d like to email us with site creds, we’ll put a dev on your site immediately to try to resolve that (assuming it’s not resolved by 2.2.9).
