There is currently a general issue on WordPress.com that is impacting Jetpack Stats and new Jetpack connections.
Right now best bet is to follow @wordpressdotcom on twitter or @jetpack as we’ll keep you posted there.

Wanted to make sure you knew Jetpack 1.1.1 was released on Friday:

We’ve been investigating many of these issues, and you should know that some problems are host specific – both the problem and solution.
If you’re still having problems I strongly recommend you upgrade to 1.1.1 or download it directly from http://jetpack.me

We’ve addressed many issues, including problems specific to various hosting providers that previously made Jetpack not work correctly. We have not see any other reports of Jetpack effecting the Dashboard or core WordPress behavior. But if that continues, please report the problem directly to Jetpack support – http://jetpack.me/support

Two suggestions:
1) That error suggests your blog is having trouble actually making a connection to WordPress.com. Simply trying again can work.
2) We’ve identified and fixed many host specific connection issues in Jetpack 1.1.1 which was released on Friday – You should install the latest version, either through upgrade or from http://jetpack.me

Currently Top Authors is not included in Jetpack. There are some differences in the user data we can get on .com vs. org, and we haven’t added this support yet to Jetpack. We will consider it for future releases.
