We use WordPress image editor to process images. It has two implementations and it uses Imagick as default.

Now we are using default flow of WordPress. If there is no enabled Imagick lib, the plugin is using GD lib.

We do have some issues with the plugin but the latest version includes fixes targeted at resolution.

That is the current set up of the watermark function.
It has been designed that way.

The images in the “.original” folder are used for recreating thumbnails, resetting images after rotating, setting watermark and so on.
If you delete that folder you won’t be able to implement actions mentioned.
