  • Try Gila or Bricks. They are the best IMHO. Most three-column themes are defincient in one way or other. I went through the whole list at multiple sites.

    Cons
    Bricks has some minor issues I cannot remember now otherwise great.
    Gila is neat but bit SERP unfriendly as sidebars are loaded first before content. So expect to see strange excerpts in yahoo or Google.

    I use gila derivative on my computer job site.

    @tomhanna
    BTW:
    Bloglet email newsletters are not pretty and have some bugs. Sometimes certains days are missed, even if there are posts.

    Unfortunately the author cannot be contacted. I tried twice their web form, twice sending to his email address and it is bounced everytime.

    That could happen if your plugin settings got corrupted in the database.

    Again to repeat it is logically impossible for this plugin (unmodified) to corrupt the database in any way or to throw that error that you saw. If I had a million dollars I would have bet it on it 🙂

    Try without any modification just for testing. Re-download from my site.

    I can assure you whatever caused this it was definitely not this plugin, at least not in its original form(unmodified).

    Also can you post future comments on the plugin page? It makes it easier to track for me. Yes, you can subscribe to the rss feed of the page there to keep track.
    Let me know how it goes.

    The plugin doesn’t touch the database in any way. It doesn’t make any queries nor does it modify any data. The query you mention is not related to this plugin either.

    It is not possible for this plugin to contribute to database corruption in any way. There must be some other cause.

    The code you have quoted above simply sends a unavailable message to a client when the plugin is activated.
    The plugin has been very well tested.

    Database can be corrupted for many reasons but this simply cannot be it. Have you tried modifying the database in any way manually? That is the most likely cause.

    What have you seen in the code that lead you to believe it may have contributed or it is bad code? Please justify your answers before making wild insinuations.

    Did you modify the plugin in any way, however minor?

    BTW: If you want any plugin authors to respond to a plugin issue then the best place to contact him is through the appropriate plugin page.

    I had no idea of this post till MacManx kindly pointed me this way.

    Thanks MacManX.

    If you want to sell your theme it should be more advanced than most of the themes we see in terms of functionality and customizability.

    IANAL. Having said that –

    You can sell code based on GPL code like RedHat does and you can build a successful model on top of that.

    Think about branding your themes. Someday you too may be able to say like – Genuine Microsoft Windows (insert your brand name instead). That will make re-selling less lucrative.

    GPL is so communist (read anti-capitalist) in nature it makes me mad sometimes. And the viral nature of the license…

    Now I feel better 🙂

    You are just becoming popular 😉

    Everyone has their own medicine against comment spam. Here is mine. Recently I upgraded to 1.5.1.3. It didn’t affect anything wrt. comment spams. They are still at zero. In fact I have observed that apparently the spammers have given up hope on my blogs and moved elsewhere.

    @notthatugly
    Have you noticed how most theme lack one thing of another. Its like water water everywhere not a drop to drink. I tried hundreds of themes trying to find what I was looking for. Even then in one case I made a custom theme and in another I adopted gila. I realized that Gila theme does something very very strange. It loads the two sidebars first and then the main content! Ideally I would have liked the content to load first and then sidebars. It really screws up your serps and search engine descriptions of your pages. So I am in search again.

    I can see there is a business here.

    I heard good things about Bad Behavior too.
    @podz Why do you need to use both? Shouldn’t one be good enough as they effectively address the same problem space?

    I use very successfully HashCash & Referrer Bouncer plugins. I am 100% spam free in my blogs.

    That looks like a normal comment. Did he use the email of anyone who had already commented before?

    I successfully use the blacklist with one word per line. It works fine.

    We can argue endlessly over the semantics or try to address the issue. Your call.
    I would rather have it focussed on solving the problem and moving on.

    @carbohydrate
    Go for at least VPS hosting, provides more protection.

    @vkaryl
    Getting you whole human DNA sequenced is a herculean job. But you can easily get certain segments sequenced freely. Do a HLA profile by registering as a kidney donor. You will get allelles for each locus.

    This concerns usability and friendliness of the forums. Yes the problem I am seeing is with few individuals but the effects are not. It affects lots of members in different degrees. Do a search to find out frustrations poured out by other members in the past. You can dismiss them, make caustic remarks or try to understand their source of frustrations and improve.

    So it is relevant to this forum and this thread.

    @macmanx That is a very interesting observation. Not only they do not do anything to deter spammers (because spammers never read the web pages, their bot does) they actually act as spam-attractors!

    No wonder Spam Karma users can so proudly display so many spam eaten messages whereas nowadays I feel deserted by spammers ;(

    All this while I was wondering how come my blog users are rapidly increasing but spam seems to have gone almost to zero!

    @jalenack
    Without the bad-mouthing, retort-at-innocent-comment and close-post-when-I-darn-well-please mavens, I think we would be better off 🙂

    Support is wonderful, free support is great, flying-off-the-handle is not. Irrespective of how helpful a person is doesn’t give him the right to behave outrageously. Such juvenile behavior is tiring to say the least.

    Just because I can close a post to new replies doesn’t mean one should do so at his whim or when the discussion turns even slightly against his sweet liking. There needs to be a clear code of conduct, specially so for such a well-visited forum.

    I wouldn’t mind helping, as always, so long it doesn’t consume a significant portion of my time.

    Note: These comments are targeted for very few individuals and do not reflect in any way on others. By and large I think most members, often many without the venerable “Support Maven” status, are very helpful and go beyond their call of duty.

    I am hoping this post will be a wake-up call to the very few for whom things have gone, a bit, to their head. To quote Pingomation – “Slow down cowboy!”
