@matt: Thanks so much for the offer. I’m not having any bandwidth issues yet at 250K hits per month but my host sometimes blocks many overseas IP’s and some of the folks can’t get to my site. I’ll email you about that maybe we can work something out.

Any graphics program will work, but some have more advanced features than others. I use Adobe Elements and JASC PaintShop Pro, both reasonably priced but very powerful.
I will review any graphics that are submitted. Almost anything is acceptable but there should be no artwork containing porn, racism, hate, you know … play nice.
A good header will have a pleasing color balance, and have something to do with the content of your site. Garish colors and things that move will distract and annoy your visitors while they read your content.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the “beholder” can click out of your site in a split second.

In reply to: Changing the Header in a Theme and Inserting ImagesInserting a header image in Batavia isn’t too hard and can be done by editing the styles.css file in the “wp-content/themes/Batavia/” folder.
First – design your image to be 760px wide by 108px tall and ftp it to your “wp-content/themes/Batavia/” folder.
Second – open the styles.css file (in the “wp-content/themes/Batavia/” folder) in an editor and find this:
#header {
margin: auto;
WIDTH: 100%;
HEIGHT: 108px;
BACKGROUND-COLOR: #CCCC99;
COLOR: #7D5B38;
}
Under the line BACKGROUND-COLOR add:
BACKGROUND: url("headerimage.jpg");(“headerimage.jpg” will be whatever you named your image)
Remember that the toolbars will be overlaying the image so design a graphic that lets them be seen.
Hopefully I haven’t forgotten anything and this will get you going in the right direction.

I also agree with moshu and miklb. Try to pick something that makes your site as unique as possible but still has some relation to the content. Content about auto racing? Put up a header with race cars or checkered flags. Content about cats? Insert cats or a cat’s paw. Content about … well you get the idea.
Most header art for WordPress is in the 750px area, but not all. There are themes that have a very small header and some span full page. Also image height shouldn’t be so tall as to take up most of the page. The majority of your current post should be seen without scrolling.

I think he takes the “kill ’em all and we’ll sort ’em out later” approach. That’s why I’ll probably get a different host for this project. VV

In reply to: Changing HeadersRoot – Thanks for the thumbs up! I was averaging 3000 hits per month before I put up the header art. March has had 87,000 hits so far and still going so someone must be looking at it. I just hope it proves to be useful to those who need it. My contribution to the cause!
