    Hi,
I enjoyed your plugin for the past year. However, after updating to wordpress 3.8, the plugin is very slow.
On the Apperance – Widget section (right side where it displays all the sidebars), it seems to take a long time for all the sidebars to load.

Also, whenever I try to click on the sidebar to expand, it takes a few seconds to open up.

And when I want to click and drag widget to the sidebar, it takes like forever.

Could it be that I have too many sidebars? (close to 100 custom sidebars) – Everytime I reposition the widget within a sidebar , the whole screen of sidebar “moves” or “refreshes”. Is it possible to have pagination display of sidebars so that it doesn’t take up too much resources. To me, it seems like the more sidebars one has , wordpress or the plugin need to load everything before it can take in new command.

Please advise what can I do to speed up.

    Thanks

  • Hi @coffeemansg,

    I hope you’re well today! 🙂

100 sidebars is indeed a lot, but if things only slowed down after the 3.8 upgrade, I’d have to suspect something else is at play.

Any chance you could try deactivating other plugins and switching to a default theme, to see if the speed is the same with that?

That would help determine if its due to a conflict.

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi,

    I have the same problem.
    How could this be solved?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi @levi-levi,

Sorry I missed this sooner. Have you gotten this sorted by any chance?

If not, could you please try deactivating other plugins and switching a default them (Twenty Fourteen for example) and letting us know if all works well with that?

Looking forward to getting that sorted for ya! 🙂

    Cheers
    David

    Hi David,

    Thank you for your reply.

I deactivated all the other plugins and switched to theme Twenty Fourteen, but problem still excists.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hi @levi-levi,

Thanks for checking on that. Do you also have a lot of custom sidebars (the original poster had 100+) ?

Just to check further too, if you deactivate Custom Sidebars plugin, does the widget section function slowly?

Also, its your widgets page that is running slowly, correct?

If that’s all checked out okay, could you please enable debugging per the following?
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress

And if you could let me know what that turns up, I’m sure we’ll be able to find more with those logs. 🙂

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,

    – I indeed have 100+ sidebars
    – If Custom sidebars plugin is deactivated, it’s indeed less slow. But it’s still slower then usual, because of all the stille excisting inactive sidebars (not used)
    – When enableling the debugging mode, I get this:

    In top:
Notice: Use of undefined constant ddsg_language – assumed ‘ddsg_language’ in /public_html/wp-content/plugins/sitemap-generator/sitemap-generator.php on line 45 Notice: automatic_feed_links is niet meer in gebruik sinds versie3.0! Gebruik in plaats daarvan add_theme_support( ‘automatic-feed-links’ ). in /public_html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 2908

    In bottom:
Notice: Undefined variable: pagingMiddleString in public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-page-numbers/wp-page-numbers.php on line 212 Notice: Undefined variable: pagingString in public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-page-numbers/wp-page-numbers.php on line 77

    Hi @levi-levi,

Thanks for those extra details. Given those errors (unrelated tho Custom Sidebars), is there any chance you could try deactivating other plugins and seeing how it all works with that?

If that works well, then you could try activating plugins again one-by-one to find where conflicts are occurring that are causing things to slow.

Could you let me know how that works for you?

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,

I deactivated all plugins, but it’s still slow.
I think the reason is because I have so many sidebars. It takes so much time to load them all.

Maybe it’s an idea to add a dropdown option in your next update? In stead of showing all the sidebars at once, you will see a dropdown where you can select a sidebar.

    Hi @levi-levi,

Thanks for your reply. Could you let me know exactly what areas of your site are running slowly?

Is it only the widgets page? The Custom Sidebars settings page?
Only back-end sections of your site? Or front-end also?

If it’s all pages, then the issue would seem to be a conflict elsewhere. But if it’s just on the custom sidebar page I’m sure we could look into a solution for sites with a lot of sidebars.

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,

    This is slow:

Admin WordPress -> Appearance – Widgets

Because of all the sidebars have to load….

    Thanks.

    Hi @levi-levi,

Thanks for clarifying that, I wasn’t sure if it was just that one page that was loading slowly.

I’ll mention that possible additional option to the plugin to the team and see if that can be built in for special cases like this.

    Thanks for your suggestion! 🙂
