Tried to update V 2.0.2 that was working fine to V 2.0.3

I received an error message of a Parse error. Unable to get to the domain after that. Had to restore my site from a back up copy. Thinking it was a fluke or glitch I attempted it a second time the next day. Same exact thing. Below in the first section is the update info I see on my WP Dashboard. I clicked the link “update now”
    Page Views Count
    Settings | Deactivate
Show front end users all time views and views today on posts, pages, index pages and custom post types with the Page Views Count Plugin. Use the Page Views Count function to add page views to any content type or object created by your theme or plugins.
    Version 2.0.2 | By a3rev Software | View details | Documentation | Support

There is a new version of Page Views Count available. View version 2.0.3 details or update now.

    ————————————————
The update process seems to complete but returns an error message of below. I again for a second time had to restore my site files from a back-up to make it operational again.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘.’, expecting ‘,’ or ‘;’ in /home/rickbeach/public_html/lasvegasantiqueshops.com/wp-content/plugins/page-views-count/admin/admin-ui.php on line 37

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • It is because of your outdated PHP Version. PHP5.6 or higher is required.

Thank You banana7777. New to all of this. I finally sifted through a bunch of sales minutia just to find the short cut to checking my version. Simple when you know. I see I am on V 4.9.4 Thanks for steering me to that.

Now on the quest on how to update the PHP version. But first to make sure what the highest versions my other apps are compatible with.

No time right now so I am in a holding pattern and leaving the Page Counter, on all my sites, at its current version level.

I doubt your server is in fact running PHP version 4.9.4 because WordPress will not run on that unless you have a very old version ( I mean years old)

You are seeing the fatal error because your servers PHP version is 5.5.0 or before. The point is that whatever version at 5.5.0 or before is obsolete and no longer supported or maintained by PHP – this means it is insecure and easy to hack.

PHP stopped support for 5.5 in July 2016 and strongly recommend that it is not used due to security vulnerabilities – see here
    http://php.net/eol.php

WordPress Requirements state that to run WordPress system config should be
    PHP version 7.2 or greater
MySQL version 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB version 10.0 or greater
    HTTPS support

You can read more about that here https://wordpress.org/about/requirements/

There is a sample email text that you can use on that page to send to your host to upgrade your system. As soon as you upgrade to PHP 5.6 or higher you will not have the issue.

Steve Thanks for your response. You are correct.

I got confused. The 4.9.4 is my WP version.

My server is Godaddy and is at PHP 5.4 I see 5.5 5.6 7.0 and 7.1 is available.

At this point I am reluctant to simply click their “Update” button and select a different “current” version, without having more knowledge on this. I have several WP sites and don’t want to suddenly cause problems on everything. Or is it as simple as that?

I’m not familiar with GoDaddy, but typically you can switch between the PHP Versions. If it will not work you can go back. If you are not sure about it, you can contact their hotline.

If your plugins are up-to-date, the risk is low. But you need to test it. PHP5.4 is not supported over 2 years now. No security updates anymore. You should update to PHP7 or above as soon as possible.
