Installed Site kit, but do not want ad sense enabled. What’s the easiest way to get rid of that code snippet (not sure which it is), and if not able to do so, which plugs in would be best for the other Google info – analytics and the like? And will I need to set up a new Analytics code or account?
    Thanks in advance

If you’re looking to remove the AdSense code snippet placed via Site Kit you can do so by disabling the option to allow Site Kit to insert ad code. You’ll find it under “Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services > AdSense”.

In your case it looks like the ad code has been placed via another means, possibly via a manual insertion into your theme files or theme configuration. You’ll need to remove this snippet the same way you applied it. If you’re having trouble locating the source of the snippet you can share your Site Health information privately via this form and I’d be happy to assist.

which plugs in would be best for the other Google info – analytics and the like?

You can use Site Kit to connect your account to Search Console, Analytics, AdSense, Tag Manager, Optimize and PageSpeed Insights. Other plugins may have the same functionality, or you can implement Google products using the respective product help center articles.

will I need to set up a new Analytics code or account?

Using Site Kit you can create an Analytics account within the plugin. Site Kit can also insert the required snippet on your site. There is no need to manually insert.

Thanks James – how do I reach out to you privately, as it does look like the code was manually placed.

You can use the form to share your Site Health details if you wish, we can then communicate through here. Do you recall inserting the AdSense snippet into your theme files manually, or via a plugin such as a Headers & Footers plugin?

Note that you can also disable Auto ads from your AdSense account, for that site. If you disable Auto ads at that level no ads will appear.

I don’t believe we added the snippet as the ads were not showing until we activiated the Google Kit, so I suspect it’s somewhere in the theme and when we loaded Site Kit even when deactivating ad sense, it was live due to being in the theme.

I see, well here are some troubleshooting steps you can undertake to determine the source of the snippet, whether it was placed via a plugin or your theme:

    1. Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    2. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”. (This will temporarily deactivate other plugins and switch to a default theme – for you only, as a logged in user).
    3. Search your sites source code, I suspect you won’t find any AdSense placed snippet
    4. Back in troubleshooting mode click on the “Enable” option next to any additional plugin one at a time, before then visiting your sites source code once more and checking does the snippet remain (each time). You’ll need to refresh the source code screen each time.
    5. If you’re able to locate snippet in your source code you’ll know which plugin if any has placed this snippet. If you’re unable to determine a plugin is responsible continue below to check your theme.
    6. Back in troubleshooting mode select a different theme, the theme normally activated on your site.
    7. Search the source code once mode (Please refresh the page before checking)
    8. If the snippet appears that means the AdSense tracking snippet is placed in your theme files directly or a theme configuration.

Let me know if you have any questions on the above. If you’re unsure how to check your sites source code you can type the below URL in your address bar:

Your AdSense snippet will contain the ca-pub- reference, you can search your source code for this.

Thanks, will give that a try…

One last question – is there a separate code for ad sense and is it more than the ca-pub- your referenced?

    Hi Maggi,

The ca-pub- reference I mentioned is a prefix for your AdSense publisher ID. It’s used to place associated Ad code and associated this with your AdSense account.

The full AdSense snippets may appear slightly different if placed manually, although your AdSense publisher ID will existing within the snippet. Here’s an example of how a manually placed Auto ads snippet looks.
