Fixed! Not very elegant but it worked. After Googling until blue in the face to find out which folder needs what permissions to no avail, I logged into my server and edited the USERS permissions on the root of the blog to include MODIFY. I rebooted the server and the Automatic Update completed successfully. I then removed the MODIFY perms from the folder.

I found that error_log was commented out in the php.ini. I edited it to write create error_log.txt. I attempted an outmatic update to 3.1.3 again and the following was written to the newly created error log.

[24-Jun-2011 07:06:02] PHP Warning: copy(C:/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/update-core.php) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in C:\wordpress\wp-admin\includes\class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 200

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

yeah… I just tried the latest auto update to 3.1.3 and once again it failed with the following:

    Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.1.3.zip
    Unpacking the update
    could not copy files
    Installation Failed

Where and what permissions should I be looking for?

Ok… nevermind… as it has been over an hour now with the site down I had to restore the backup I have of it.

    Thanks for all the help!

    Cheers

Ok… so I just tried manually again to update to 3.1. I got further this time to the page where it prompts me to update the database. I did and the page said the DB was updated successfully. I can access the ADMIN page by going to the actual URL, however, I can not access the blog itself http://blog.jollyrogersmotorcycleclub.com. It just continually says, “Website found. Waiting for reply”, in the browser status bar and the page is blank.

The site is now down… any suggestion here would be welcomed.

Thanks for the reply esmi however, I am not clear what you are suggesting.

PS… I host the blog myself on my servers.

    You got’s to love it!!

So… as already mentioned the automated upgrade fails.
And following the exact steps listed here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress

    … fails also.

Once manually upgrading all the files the blog site just renders a blank page while the hour glass continues to spin. Fun times!

Thank goodness I not only made a backup of the blog directory but also took a snapshot of the server prior so that I was able to restore to the previous state successfully.

    So much for upgrading.

Well… that’s my question here in the post… Also, if it’s that huge… how does one upgrade?

Thanks Jpneok. However, as I stated I was successful updating from 3.0.3 to 3.0.4 with the automated update and in the process it fixed the issue with Akismet.

I just attempted the automated update of Akisment from 2.4.0 to 2.5.1 but it failed again. However, this time when I downloaded 2.5.1 and manually copied the files to the Plugins\Akismet folder it updated successfully and is working properly.

    Cheers!! 🙂

    So… here’s the latest.

Got the message that there was a security flas in 3.0.3 yesterday. Figured since I still had the backup I made prior to the manual install of 3.0.3 I would try the automated update…what the heck?

The autmated update to 3.0.4 worked perfectly just as all other updates have in the past (except for 3.0.3).

And to my surprise, Akismet was now present as well. And there is no longer any prompt for IIS Admin Credentials when accessing the Plugins link on the WP Dashboard.

However, Akismet also now says that there is an update available for it. I am a little hesitant in trying that but again… what the heck? I am now taking a snapshot of the server and as soon as it is done I will try the Akismet automated update.

Things may just be looking up

Thanks Brian. I was merely just remembering that the only thing that has or would have changed was Windows Update which is why I said “excuse me”. Yes, I am aware that Ipstenu didn’t say I ran CPanel. I was merely stating that I didnt’ as in the previous threads others were Indicating I needed to check that. And yes, I am very aware that Windows Updates include updates to IIS. And indeed… we are not sure what happened but something indeed changed.

    (@tonymuffin)

yeah… that was what was so interesting after the 1st failed manual attempt to upgrade. The Blog site itself suddenly was prompted for the IIS Admin credentials just to access the blog. That had never happened before. As mentioned rolling back to the backup (3.0.1) that issue went away.

    Thread Starter tonymuffin

    (@tonymuffin)

Yes. All is working now as I indicated. The WP Dashboard shows that the second attempt at manually updating to 3.0.3 worked.

The only issue now is that I was unable to perform the automated update of Akismet. It failed in the process with the error message I mention on the page 1 of this post.

As indicated, I attempted a manual update but for some reason now Akismet is no longer showing in the Dashboard … and… whenever I try to access the Pluggin menu on the Dashboard it prompts me for my IIS Admin credentials. Only the Pluggin menu item does this. Once I enter my IIS Admin credentials I am able to access the WP Dashboard pluggin menu but as stated Akismet is not displayed.

Excuse me… the only things that have changed on the server would be the Windows Updates which are performed on a regular basis.
