Your browser was saying a few elements on the page were insecure; the browser was not saying the entire site was insecure. Your site is now trying to be https secure but can’t since you don’t have an SSL on your webserver to provide https. You have to change back to http.
Supposedly I could edit a PHP configuration file, but I don’t have access to that on this machine. I only have an internet connection
At this point, you can’t do anything without FTP. Get FTP access or file manager access through your host and read Changing The Site URL « WordPress Codex for recovery instructions by different methods to change the “Site Address (URL)” and “WordPress Address (URL)” back to http, probably by the same method you used before.

It’s best to go to the support site where you bought the theme http://www.elegantthemes.com for help with customizations and issues. You paid for support when you bought the theme, so you should contact the people who sold you the theme.

In reply to: Can't install plugin and themeUse interconnectit.com WordPress Serialized PHP Search Replace Tool to change all URLs in the database. Changing only the site and address URLs in the options table in the database or via wp-config.php won’t also change all other URLS in the database, such as for menus, images, etc.

In reply to: theme not working since wordpress 4.6 update@Juanaid: using 777 permissions is a very bad idea; you will get hacked with 777 permissions.
@klakared: read Changing File Permissions « WordPress Codex on how to correctly set permissions for wp-content so WordPress can create needed directories. You may need to use FTP; if so, see Filezilla and FTP Clients « WordPress Codex. Or try using your host’s Cpanel.

In reply to: People Matching PluginYou gave no indication that you did any homework before posting, either via Google or searching https://wordpress.org/plugins/ Plugin suggestion questions are generally far too broad and subjective for these forums.
And if you didn’t already find a plugin for your very specific feature – “answering the same questions when at least 7 out of 10 of the answers match” – it will involve custom work. If you can’t do the work yourself, consider looking for a reputable person on http://jobs.wordpress.net/ or http://directory.codepoet.com or http://upwork.com
