Found it, apache2’s apach2.conf has AllowOverride set to None, amended it to All, works a treat.
I have read the how to, I chose Numeric permalinks in place of the defaults, neither the two sample wordpress pages that short url has created short urls for or the couple of external url redirects work, both return a 404. The install of the plugin seems fairly straight forward is there something else I should have done?
