So far so-so good. The standard image now remains no matter what. But if you have BOTH a standard and eternal feature image, after update, no feature image shows up as a thumbnail on the pages they are supposed to be. That is, both images are there on the edit page, but none show up as the thumbnail where it’s supposed to be.

Thanks for your quick reply. Here is what I do:
I create a page. I Set the standard feature image the normal way. I publish it.
It works. The feature image is saved. THEN I make some changes but not to the featured image and UPDATE the page and the featured image is gone. The external featured image works. But on any update – it erase the standard feature image. (This only happens when the standard feature image has been set and the page is updated. I.e. If you set the standard feature image as part of the change it will work. But then if you change anything else, leaving the standard image, it will be reset upon update.)
