I figured it out. I needed to comment out the WP-Super-Cache lines form the .htaccess file.

I just tried that. Unfortunately, it didn’t work.

I’m guessing that the number of comments is stored in one of the database fields. By copying and restoring the database, that number wasn’t re-built.
