Thanks Michael. That addressed the issue but only partly. I still got the problem with the start page. It looks like it lost all CSS-formatting. In short – it looks like shit.

In fact I did open all the files to have a look at them. Apparently something went wrong when I closed sidebar.php and footer.php. Maybe I did hit save, I don’t know. Anyway. I opened them again and this time specifically saved them UTF-8 encoded.
Bingo! There it was.
