It appears my issue is resolved. The hosting provider has supplied me with a password that enables me to access my dashboard. Also, I was mistaken about there being no backup dating from prior to the hack. I was looking in the wrong place. Thank you James for your interest in the problem.

My website is not used by me very often (that’s a huge understatement). I noticed the hack on 4 July, but website statistics tell me that the site had had no visitors since December. I infer that means that the hack happened in December. The backup page in CPanel shows no backups. My hosting provider tells me that ordinarily they only keep backups going back 30 days, but “they are looking into it.”

Since my website is restored (although I am locked out of control of it) I have printed off all its pages. Being a small website, it would be little trouble to recreate from scratch. I wanted to make changes to it anyway.

I’ve had a look at phpMyAdmin. Database tables displayed are as follows:
    wp_commentmeta; wp_comments; wp_links; wp_options; wp_postmeta; wp_posts; wp_simple_history; wp_simple_history_contexts.
There is no wp_users table. What now?

Uploading worked with the last option, 777. After uploading I changed setting back to 755 and confirmed that uploading still worked. Once again, thanks for the help offered.

Thanks for your advice, installation now successfully completed. However I have struck another problem. When I tried to upload images, I got the error message “unable to create directory wp-contents/uploads/2013/12/. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

What do I have to do to rectify this?
