Go under Gallery>Options>Thumbnail
Find ‘Set fix dimension’ and uncheck ‘Ignore the aspect ratio, no portrait thumbnails’

Found the problem. It was the Event Calendar plug-in set to the wrong Event Category.
sorry, it is version 2.7 being used not 2.6
