Thanks. It turned out to be a very popular plugin that I have used for a long time – WordPress Threaded Comments. I was able to go to Settings > Discussions and change the default to allow for nested replies. That was the feature I most wanted to keep.

I don’t recall a recent upgrade which seems the most likely way of introducing a bug.

I recall a few months ago I requested help with another problem but the solution was the same. I promise to deactivate all of the plugins before crying wolf again.

    Again, thanks.

That was too easy of an answer. Many thanks.

It has been so long since I wandered around that area that it was unfamiliar territory. The other widgets were modifiable from the themes, widgets area that I just kept on trying to find a way for that to work.

    Again, thanks.

Hopefully I can be more precise.

I go to the admin page and click appearance, then widgets. I then click on links, which is presently in the first column. A box appears. At the top it allows me to specify the BLOG ROLL, NEWS SOURCES, OTHER LINKS or ALL LINKS.

Below that there are 4 check boxes. They are SHOW LINK IMAGE, SHOW LINK NAME, SHOW LINK DESCRIPTION and SHOW LINK RATING. The first two were checked. The others were not. I have tried checking various combinations but it seems not to make any difference.

Below that I am offered the option of locating the widget in the first or second column and the position in that column. My problem is that there is nothing else available. I cannot edit any of my links.

It would seem the odds are in favor of one of your suggestions being right. I’ll try but I am barely literate in HTML; not at all in php.

    A large thank you.

Thanks. I should see if the host can do it since, except for a little HTML, my programming skills have more than 30 years of rust on them.

I apparently don’t have access to my PHP.ini file. At least I was unable to find it.

I implemented suggestions 2 and 3, without success.

I will talk to my host tomorrow or Monday.

Thanks for the help but I was an assembler language programmer back in the 70s and have become almost proficient at HTML. PHP is not even in my vocabulary.

It is impressive from a graphic point of view but I take it that content is important to you. White lettering on a dark background makes it difficult to read, even for those with younger eyes than mine.

It’s attractive but all of the flash distracts from any content. It also takes far too long to load.

I am officially entitled to claim senility.

    Try The Couth Hillbilly.

Sorry, I had to take my wife out to eat. She retired from the kitchen as well as teaching.

I have not loaded widget logic. I was wondering if it might be of help. I went to edit my theme and it already read as you say it should. Were you able to change it? After checking that out I viewed my site but it still shows no widgets in the sidebars other than those that came with it. I also tried to move the widgets on the design/widget page. They still disappear when I attempt to save.

I have been searching everywhere for a solution to my widget problem. You obviously know widgets. I don’t know if your widget would solve my problem or not.

I downloaded WP 2.5.1 a couple of weeks ago. I am brand new to blogging but have very basic html ability – no php at all. I decided on the Cutline 3 ColumnRight theme. I love everything about it except for the widget problem.

Those widgets that were included with the theme apparently all work. Plugins work, unless they involve a widget for a sidebar. A poster at support tried to help. None of his suggestions worked. He downloaded Cutline and it worked for him. Cutline is no longer supported, which seems strange as it’s claimed to be the most downloaded theme.

I have started over several times. The install of WP was by the ISP, Bluehost.

On the dashboard’s widget page, all installed widgets are listed on the left-hand side. You can add them to the right side but they disappear as soon as I save, refresh or view the page. They never appear in either sidebar. Should there not be a way of specifying in which column a widget should appear?

I am truly at a loss. I desperately need help. My blog is at: http://www.crawfordharris.com

I downloaded the version from the URL you provided. No difference. I tried the 3 Column Split. No change.

Those two situations plus your success should be a sufficient clue as to identify the problem. It’s just that my limited understanding means I wouldn’t see it if it hit me in the face.

I got the 1.1 version from WordPress’ theme site. I got the 1.2 from the page you listed. I have been searching around for 1.3 for 3 Column Right. If it is out there, google can’t find it. It may be available for the 3 Column Split. I don’t want to go there but I may have to (providing 1.3 is available for it). I did see a site with the 3 Column Right that was running an amazon widget and some others. The site mentioned running 1.3 but gave the same link you did.

I have changed the images, ridded the site of the dotted lines, changed the bars above the headers in the sidebars to red and added a logo. I have a barely passing acquaintance with html, so those changes were not too daunting. php is totally alien to me. I was an asswembler language programmer on the ‘big iron’ back in the 1970s and built my 1st computer in 1957, with vacuum tubes. I have let the techie world pass me by but feel the need for an outlet for spouting off. At my age it is a preferable alternative to drooling. All I need is to get those widgets where visitors can see them.

Inch by inch. I downloaded and installed version 1.3 from another location. When I checked, the coding in the stylesheet showed 1.2 although the graphics on the design/theme pages proudly proclaims it as Cutline 1pt2 3 Column Right. I see no difference between 1.1 and 1.2.

I’ll try again. Please keep checking up on me.

    I was using version 1.1.

I downloaded 1.3, started modifying it and just noticed that inside the stylesheet it said it was version 1.1 also.

I’ll try to find a real 1.3 and maybe even a 2.1 and let you know the results.
